Some of our classic Aussie names are under huge threat.

A study has shown that names like Bruce and Sheryl are on the verge of becoming extinct with only eight Aussie babies given the name in 2018.

Gary and Wayne are also under threat.

But the biggest loss is Beryl – with reports no-one has taken the name since 2005.

According to McCrindle, the most popular names last year were Oliver for boys and Charlotte for girls.

Followed by William, Jack, Noah, Thomas, James, Lucas, Henry, Ethan, and Mason.

And for girls Olivia, Ava, Amelia, Mia, Isla, Grace, Ella, Chloe, and Harper.

What name do you notice we no longer hear anymore?

  • I don’t hear kids being named Debbie, Sharon, Kylie, Tracey, Donna, Norma, Agnes, Margaret any more

  • I have an uncle Gary and my father, his brother, has the middle name Wayne. Don’t see many with those names, if at all.

  • Lots of old names are coming back, we got a Herbert in the family the other day. My first wasn’t on the most popular list but is now so you just find a name you both love and go with it.

  • There are so many names that are no longer used as first names but I hope they are carried on as middle names.

  • It is a generation gap,the old names are no longer popular unless you give them to your children as a respect to family!

  • I must admit I’ve heard the name Beryl before. Is it a male or female name?

    • Beryl is a name for a female. Old names tend to be used as middle names, not first names.
Because most people don’t mention their middle names others don’t realise the name is still being used. Sometimes they are used 2 or 3 generations later.

      • Thank you so much for your detailed answer. :-)

  • I think the issue here is all the popular name lists that come out every so often. People then choose the popular instead of using their own brain and choosing their own name. Bruce and Cheryl…….I can see why they may be disappearing ????????????

    • Not us, we avoid the top ten popular names like the plague! Both my boys have names that are still well known, but not very common. Girls might be different, but we haven’t been there yet! Both boys have old middle names in honour of their great grandfathers – Byron for one and Maurice for the other. I am a Rebekah and always thought it was a gift to have a different name (though there were lots of Rebecca’s around).
