A debate on Facebook over the Coles FREE container promotion turns nasty.

The post on Facebook page, Budgeting, Food, Stockpiling, Savings Ideas, Life Help Australia, made it clear people were divided over the promotion to earn points to claim your FREE container.

Criticising the promotion, one member of the group wrote: ‘They’re not free you have to spend like 20 bucks to get one … I’d rather much have the cash at the end of it but whatever floats your boat.’

Said another: ‘It’s not free it cost $20 per point.’

However this comment prompted fans of the promotion to get all fired up, defending Coles. ‘It’s free because you’re shopping there anyway, you’re just accumulating credits as you shop. Grow up!!’

Another wrote: ‘What do you mean you would rather have the cash at the end of it? Do you not go grocery shopping? If you can eat for completely free please tell me your secret. I do my weekly shop at Coles and so I accumulate points for these containers as well as points that eventually add up to flybuys dollars. When I have enough points for a container I scan the container as well as my flybuys card and the price is changed to $0.00. I just don’t understand how you think you have to pay for the containers.’

‘OMG they are free, because you still get all the other groceries for the money you spend… that does not mean the container costs you money,’ wrote another.

Another one said: ‘All these negative nancies remind me why I don’t post in groups.’ Said another: ‘So much negativity for some bloody FREE Tupperware lol.’

To be honest I can actually see both sides of this argument.  If you don’t usually shop at Coles and are only going there in the hopes of spending money to claim a free container then you really are defeating the purpose.

Are you a Coles or Woolworths shopper? Do you swap supermarkets depending on the promotion?

  • There are some silly people out there.
The containers are free … we are adults and there is no need to spend money you wouldnt normally spend. Its the same with things like flybuys….do your normal shop and get points. Do not buy stuff just to get the containers or points. Just shop as per normal and cash in your points if and when you have them.

  • I have at least half a dozen of the containers of various sizes. Found them to be really good and haven’t spent any more on my groceries than what I normally would spend. If I didn’t want the containers myself, there is always someone else who would appreciate them.

  • You need a fly buys card anyhow, and I don’t have one, nor intend to get one.

  • It really has gotten out of control.

  • I am a Coles shopper and this is just a nice to have! If you don’t want the containers, don’t redeem for them. Simple. People are obviously not understanding of how you receive them. Nobody is asking you to pay or spend more for them. Simply, if you spend a certain amount you qualify. You can then choose whether or not you want them or not. Not hard!!!

    • This is an amazing idea. I’ve already collected 5 containers. I’m a regular shopper at Coles, so I’m just doing my weekly shop and being rewarded for doing so. Its upsetting to hear people complaining about this.

  • sometimes I will change where I do the bulk of the shop. I figure I’m spending the money already so what the harm getting something extra out of it

  • I certainly don’t change my grocery shopping depending on a promotion.

  • I need more faux Tupperware like a hole in the head. I won’t be cashing in my dockets.

  • Nothing like a Coles promotion to polarise society!

  • Crazy how these things get people so worked up. I feel a normal family shopping wouldnt earn that many but hey I have to do my shopping so im getting them free

  • It’s a good idea but for my family it is an unachievable reward and we always do our main shop at Coles.

  • I think it’s a great idea. A few weeks of doing my normal shop and I have a free container. I shop at Coles anyway so I’m getting something for free for being loyal and doing my regular shop. I am also still earning Flybuys too. It’s a great incentive

  • I also can’t understand these complaints. Just don’t accept them if you don’t like them.

  • If you spend the money anyway then the containers don’t cost you – common sense.
Don’t buy more than you usually would – common sense.
Cannot understand these complaints at all.

  • I only ever shop at Woolies. for my suburb, Woolies has better product selection, better customer service, and their rewards program is far better. I would only ever shop at Coles if a product was at least a 50% off special, for me, the filthy store, rude assistants and sub par produce is not worth anything less, it is too much angst lol! The only thing I have ever collected from Coles was the first range of mini items, and I did that by asking all of my non kid friends to get them for me.
