I think I’m pretty tech-savvy but I still love flicking through the paper catalogues of supermarket specials. But now Coles has done the unthinkable and stopped delivering printed catalogues to customer’s mailboxes.

It’s become a bit of a ritual in our home for family members to circle what they want on the Coles’ specials catalogues. But Coles’ latest bombshell has blown that tradition up for us.

Thank goodness Woolworths has announced that they have no plans to stop delivering their paper catalogues to shoppers’ homes. So I guess we’ll be switching to Woolies from now on.

Coles has said that from September it will stop all catalogue deliveries and instead, replace this service with their new digital platform called Coles&Co.

Coles&Co is described as “a brand new experience that features all our best specials and new products, along with daily recipes, tips and tricks from Australia’s favourite chefs – including Curtis!”

Coles urged customers to sign up to coles&co to “unlock new exclusive content and previews of weekly specials, including many at half price”.

Shop From The Catalogue

It’s not all doom and gloom as the online catalogue is admittedly pretty nifty, especially the feature where you can shop directly from the digital catalogue. But it’s just not the same as getting stuck in with a pen and tearing out the recipes to save for later.

Coles has said that there will be a limited number of paper catalogues available instore…but who knows how long it will be before they stop this too. Thank goodness though the Coles monthly magazine is still being printed as usual.

Coles said that its shift to digital catalogues is a direct result of an increase of more than 50% in their online catalogue readership since March, as well as its commitment to sustainability.

No Plans to Dump Paper Catalogues

Woolworths has spoken to 7NEWS saying that the supermarket has no plans to change their catalogue format for now.

“We know how important value and specials are to our customers right now,” a Woolworths spokesperson said.

“We’ll continue to offer our printed catalogue alongside our digital version for the foreseeable future, so our customers can discover specials in the way that works best for them.

“As more of our customers turn to our website and app to shop, we’re featuring more specials in the digital catalogue than our print version and putting a bigger focus on meal planning and recipe ideas.

“We’ve also made it easier to shop from the digital catalogue with the ability to add items directly to your shopping list at the tap of a button.

“We’ll continue to listen to our customers and tailor our approach in line with their evolving needs.”

While many customers wouldn’t care about this dramatic shift, there are a number of shoppers who will be mourning the loss of their Coles calalogues.

  • I do love getting catalogues in the mail and see the specials. I normally shop at Woolworths but if there’s a big discount on items I need I would go to coles. Looking at the online catalogue just isn’t the same.

  • I am happy either way…I get a sneek peek on line a few days before the catalogue is out..If I want the paper form I get it at the Supermarket..On line you can read it anywhere you are ..so win win..

  • Still not happy over this move. I hate looking the specials up on the computer – just doesn’t have the same feel as browsing the catalogue with a coffee in hand. Think a lot of older shoppers are now going to Woollies as they still send out catalogues.

  • We never get junk mail where we live, so I’m not too fussed. At least it will save some trees :)

  • Feels a little bittersweet doesn’t it.
    I am all for sustainable choices and these definitely helps reduce waste. However on the other hand we shop for my elderly grandmother and she uses the catalogues to create her shopping list. She doesn’t have access to the internet and doesn’t own a smart phone or computer.
    I understand the idea, but I think as with a lot of things, you still need both.

  • Dumb idea. Especially for someone like my Mum who doesn’t own a computer or smartphone.
    If I have 5mins peace, I sit down to drink a cup of coffee & flick through catalogues. I think Coles will loose a lit of customers.

  • I am sad. Working on screens all day, I personally love to flick through a paper catalogue. I read all of those delivered to me. Whilst the catalogues are in-store, at that point it is too late forme. Sometimes I will grab one if there’s a particular recipe I’ve seen online that I want to cut out, but otherwise it’s too late for my weekly shopping. And I shop from the catalogue. I make sure I get all of the discounted products.
