Coles is under fire for banning trolleys from some self-serve check-outs.

The ban is being trialled in select stores, including Fountain Gate in Melbourne, after staff members in that store told shoppers trolleys were no longer welcome in the self-serve area, shares News.com.au.

Shoppers have taken to social media to vent their frustrations, with one Facebook user describing the rule change as resulting in an “unpleasant paying experience”.

Another woman, who recently had a hip operation, claimed the policy made it impossible to carry and pay for items.

Others say banning trolleys from assisted check-outs forces many customers to join regular checkout queues, creating longer waiting times for shoppers.

A Coles spokesperson said “Assisted check-outs are a preferred choice of checkout for many customers and offer convenience and efficiency in their shopping experience,” the spokeswoman said.

“To improve service to customers and ease congestion, in a small number of stores we are accepting baskets only through the assisted check-outs.

“Team members are available to serve customers with trolleys in the main lane registers, and if there is not one vacant the store can open a register to assist customers with their shopping.”

Do you think trolley banning is going a bit too far?

  • What was he final outcome on this decision? Did Coles back down?

  • Well done Coles, out of touch with society again. If it’s not promoting plastic landfill minis it’s removing trolleys for mum’s who need to have their kids in there while shopping.

  • This is ridiculous! Here in Launceston I have actually been to stores at around 7pm and found that there were no normal checkouts available – only self serve or express and as I was doing my weekly shop I had a trolley full. In the end I have had to inconvenience others by using the express if this happens as it’s just too hard to use self serve and now they’re making it even harder for people! Also – what if I want to self serve but have my three year old? I need him in a trolley so he doesn’t take off or touch things, etc. when I’m trying to check out.

  • Maybe they need to get rid of the self serve checkouts then. They should always make sure all checkouts are manned or someone available if it gets too busy

  • Hmmmm, I must admit the big trolleys are a nuisance… but then what is self serve checkout for? I sometimes take the smaller trolleys if I’ve purchased more items than expected, or the basket. Simply Coles is going to have to open many more checkouts then than they currently do. Many more!

  • Think that area should be made wider for trollies in self serve area, or more small number items check out. There is sometimes 2 or even only one person on small amount of goods outlet. Mums with kids may only have few items which may or not be bulky but child is young enough to sit in
trolly seat! This making it hard for Mum to hold child and shopping. So think supermarkets need to check needs of their shoppers exiting shop..In my day customer was always ‘right’. If customer is happy they go back to that store

  • Do they mean just the big trolleys? Are the small pull alongs still allowed? I feel they are just doing trials to see if it makes the whole check outs flow better, I always go through self check out because my son likes to do the checking out, and I like to pack my goods carefully, I find a lot of check out operators are not careful with your fruit and breads, squashing them too hard.

  • Maybe they could make the self-service area bigger instead. Allowing just baskets means that the only people who can use them, are people with just a few items. What’s the difference with the express checkouts then?

  • Yes it’s going too far. Given the fact that often there’s only an express lane and MAYBE one or two registers open this would blow out wait times at my local (very busy) store. I’ve taken a trolley through self serve when I’ve had to get something heavy (multiple milk, bags of rice) and I always make sure the trolley stays out of everyone’s way. Self service was never a designated area for people with only a few items, it was simply an area where you could bag and pay for your shopping yourself.

    • I agree, I’ve been through them with a small trolley that had a few heavy things in it

  • Not a good idea if you ask me, especially not when you have a baby or toddler in the trolley ! The article states most people prefer assisted check-outs. I wonder if that is true ? Most certainly not for me.

  • This Isn’t a great rule. I can’t push a pram and basket at the same time, I opt for trolley for her to sit in.

  • This is rediculous. Parents have their babies in trolleys, elderly lean on trolleys to support themselves
These people will end up shopping elsewhere

  • The amount you can put in a basket you would be able to use the express checkout. Coles are going to lose a lot of customers if they make this ban in too many supermarkets. Parents use the trolleys to sit their babies and toddlers in so they are safe, don’t put other customers at risk or hopefuul not pull stock off shelves. Are they going to ban Mums with strollers too. Mums can’t put much in the bottom tray of one of them to get the shopping to a car or walk home. Self-serve checkouts and the need for less staff has not led to a reduction in prices at all.

  • Depends on the store some don’t fit trolleys but where they don’t fit this should have always been the rule and there would be no issues.
