Red roses remain the most popular choice on Valentine’s Day – but a variety of new colours are gaining in popularity.  Why not make a unique choice and make your gift stand out from the crowd?

Speaking recently with 891 ABC Adelaide, flower supplier Karol Stolarski spoke about the range of new rose colours that are available to customers for Valentine’s Day.

“The rose colours are amazing, especially the shorter roses, lots of bright colours for happy times.  The colours are diversifying with genetic engineering, you get all sorts of crazy colours, I can show you a black rose, a rainbow rose.”

Within his cold storage room at the Adelaide Flower Market in Richmond, Karol has over 60 floral products on offer.  He is more than happy to supply anything from popular red roses to a black variety, if customers want them.

“The black rose is actually a dyed rose — a red rose dyed with blue [food] dye — it gets taken up by the stem and it goes to the head and it colours the head,” he said.  “Unfortunately as part of the process everything else [stems and leaves] goes blue as well.”

Karol told the ABC, that the early summer heat had placed stress on rose supplies and their growers – affecting the availability of roses for Valentine’s Day.

“With the early heat in December it certainly shortened the length of the roses, long-stemmed red roses are at a premium this year,” he said.  “There’s still plenty of roses but they definitely took a big hit.  Some people choose not to go for roses, that’s just personal choice but it is still the flower for Valentine’s Day, the flower of love.”

Valentine’s Day is tomorrow, Sunday February 14th.
