20 lucky winners will receive a copy of The Opal Dragonfly by Julian Leatherdale valued at $29.99 each

WIN 1 of 20 copies of the novel The Opal Dragonfly by Julian Leatherdale, thanks to Allen & Unwin.

September, 1851. Sydney, city of secrets and gossip. Seventeen-year-old Isobel Macleod is determined to save her father because she loves him. But when she dares to trespass in a forbidden male world, she will be plunged into social disgrace. A wave of ill fortune threatens to swallow up her family and their stately home, Rosemount Hall, ‘the finest house in the colony’ on the foreshores of Sydney Harbour.

Is Isobel to blame for her family’s fate or does the cause lie further in the past? When Isobel was four, Major Macleod returned from an expedition with two ‘souvenirs': an Aboriginal girl who became her friend and two opals fashioned into a dragonfly brooch for her mother.

When Isobel inherits this ‘unlucky’ heirloom, she wonders if the terrible dreams it summons are a curse or a gift. Now Isobel’s hopes for her future depend on a charming bohemian who encourages her hidden passion to become an artist. Will she now be permanently exiled from her family home? Or will she be transformed into a new self, like a magnificent dragonfly emerging into the sunlight?

A daughter sacrifices her reputation, two men bid for the love of a woman, freedom is found in the heart of a dust storm, a father’s legacy reveals past crimes.

Inspired by Elizabeth Bay House and the other grand villas of Sydney’s Woolloomooloo Hill, The Opal Dragonfly tells the bittersweet story of an ambitious family’s fall from grace and a brave young woman’s struggle to find her true self.

  • Uluru is estimated to be 1750 million years old. That’s historic enough for me lol.

  • I love coin collecting,
    I love history,
    So the Sydney Mint,
    It would have to be.

  • The old gumtree in south Australia. Memories of sitting there with my nana.

  • The old mines at Burra, SA. You can feel the history in the old abandoned buildings, you can hear the workers hard at graft, echoing through the valley. The landscape is alive with history.

  • Dundullimal homestead in western nsw, is an excellent example of a pioneer slab hut and a good lesson in life in the country in the 1800s

  • Port Arthur. It of course has significant historical significance with being one of the best preserved convict sites in Australia. Its an amazing place to visit and the ghost tours are great! But the fact it also is now a modern day historical site after the massacre, makes it even more important. We must never forget the positives that came from such a horrible day.

  • UBIRR because of the art galleries that have been painted for around 40 000 years with vital information about indigenous beliefs.

  • Ballarat, The gold rush always intrigued me and I’ve always been fascinated with how it came about!

  • Uluru the spiritual home of Australia

  • uluru , the heart of our country

  • Ballarat. Gold, rawness and intrigue!

  • I love to walk The Flume. it’s the old water supply system from Halls Gap to Stawell. A lot of the wooden parts of the structure have rotted away, but it was such a huge achievement in engineering. It is amazing that they built it all those years ago.

  • love the rocks in sydney and the history of the place

  • Uluru. We are lucky enough to love near enough to visit this magical, cultural place often. It’s one of those places in Australia you need to visit at least once in your life!

  • The penal station remains on Sarah Island, Macquarie Harbour. It’s still isolated, wild and really eerie to visit.
