We are SUPER excited to give you the opportunity to WIN Amazon’s new smart screen display, the Echo Show 8!

For many, the school holidays have involved a complete change of plans with holidays, plans and outings being swapped for time in with family. If you’re struggling to come up with ideas on how to entertain your kids during this period of home isolation, it might be time to get a smart home device and let tech do the hard work!

Amazon recently released its new smart screen display, the Echo Show 8, which can display your favourite photos, show you the weather and keep you up to date with the latest movie trailers. With Alexa on board, you can ask questions, plays music on request, control compatible smart-home devices and more. You are able to extend Alexa’s capabilities by installing “Skills” which are essentially Alexa’s version of apps – perfect for children and adults, and can personalise your experience even further. Listen to your favourite news station, find recipes, do a workout, read a bed time story, play a game and much more!

We’ve come up with a list of all the fun things Alexa can say or do that’ll be sure to keep your kids entertained for hours this Easter. To start exploring, simply ask “Alexa, what are your kid Skills?”.

1. Sing along with Alexa

Hosting an array of music streaming services, and with many different voice control features, Alexa can open your family to music like you’ve never experienced before. The Echo Show 8 also has a karaoke feature so you can host concerts in your living room! To get started just try asking “Alexa, sing a song”, “Alexa, play baby shark” or even “Alexa, can you beatbox?”

2. Play games with Alexa

Getting sick of the board games in the cupboard and the Nintendo games? Alexa has a huge range of games to play with the whole family. Exclusive to Australia is the SpongeBob Challenge – a memory game where you take on the role of a new Krusty Krab employee tasked with remembering increasingly complicated food orders and relaying them to other staff members who include SpongeBob, Squidward and Mr. Krabs. Not a SpongeBob fan? Ask Alexa to play Simon Says, Pikachu Talk to chat to a Pokémon or 21 Questions. To get started just ask “Alexa, what games can you play?”.

3. Ask Alexa for fun facts

For a quick learning exercise, Alexa can round off facts about a wide range of topics such as animals, geography, music and more! To get started try asking “Alexa, tell me a fun fact”.

4. Ask Alexa any question under the sun

Did you know you can ask Alexa if you’re a mermaid, which planet you are or even if she can fart? The kids will be entertained for hours asking her every question you don’t want to (or can’t!) answer.

5. Let Alexa choose the entertainment

Bored at home and need entertainment? Try telling Alexa “Alexa, I’m bored”, “Alexa, surprise me” or “Alexa, give me a lucky dip”.

 6. Get Alexa to take over story time

Hosting a collection of professionally narrated short stories for kids aged 5-12, you can tune in at any time to hear your family story of choice via this skill from the Amazon education team. To get started just say “Alexa, ask Amazon Storytime to read me a story”.

 7. Let Alexa help with homework

Did you know that Alexa is also a mathematician? Doing homework with Alexa is an easy and fun way for children to practice maths. Kids can choose the appropriate level and different topics, including addition, multiplication, rounding and more! Alexa can keep track of scores and progress, increase and decrease difficulty as needed and celebrates when your kids reach their goals. To get started say “Alexa, start Amazon Math”.

8. Exclusive to Echo Show 8: Watch TV with Alexa

Whether you’re wanting to watch the latest movie trailer or the kids’ favourite show you can do so with Alexa! To get started try  “Alexa, play The Wiggles” or “Alexa, watch ABC Me on iView”. ABC will extend its educational programming on ABC ME to support students and caregivers at home, from 10am to 3pm each weekday during Term 2. The schedule moves from primary content in the mornings through to secondary content in the afternoons.

  • I’d love one so my girls can have all the answers.

  • “Alexa, wake everyone up at 6am… play us the Tai Chi exercise steps!” With social distancing creating havoc on our home life, it’s important to stay focused isolating at home. Echo Show 8 would provide some semblance of ‘normality’ by giving daily ‘MUM’tivation for us all to stretch our wings!

  • Local block bingo no longer exciting.
Echo Show 8 and pizza… so inviting.
Singing, games, stories… my family’s smiles would just shine.
    Alexa’s simply divine!

  • Kids are going crazy in iso!

  • Perfect to keep everyone entertained and educated – would love to bust out this beauty when we need some help from Alexa!

  • This would be useful for all our children but particularly for Miss seven and she is vision impaired but there is nothing wrong with her hearing!

  • Be helpful when kids have so many questions alexa can help instead

  • WE travel a lot so story time would be perfect, something to distract from just sitting.

  • Because I work in an essential service and have to go to work……The kids need as much variety as they can get and I am not there to give them ideas

  • My kids give me a run for my money… asking 100’s of questions… if Alexa can share that burden that would be a dream!

  • Wouldn’t it be nice to have ebooks read by Alexa! Having them read while slowly drifting off to sleep. Ahhh, the serenity.

  • When things go back to normal, my partner and I tour a lot for work and the Alexa would be great fun for our down time days

  • It will be great for a boredom buster by asking to surprise us with no doubt great activities to do. The karaoke will be great for the whole family. There at that age when they love fun facts then tell others. If that wasn’t enough, a wonderful story at bedtime. Us mums are limited to the stories, where we purchase books and ongoing cost with Alexa the stories will be endless and a vast array of stories.A lovely gift for all.

  • How amazing to keep everyone entertained so easily! Experimenting with what is the funniest things you can make Alexa say plus the TV feature will save us so much time! Singing along, what a brilliant way for us to manage stress whilst singing along and dancing around the room!

  • Alexa is the queen of our household and I’m convinced my grocery list would dismal without her help. But alas, Alexa is showing her age and bit outdated, so having her supercharged with a screen would make the whole family happy!
