Win one of 22 copies of The Slightly Alarming Tale of the Whispering Wars by Jaclyn Moriarty, thanks to Allen & Unwin.

An enchanting and whimsical spell-filled fantasy novel from Jaclyn Moriarty, the highly-acclaimed author of The Extremely Inconvenient Adventures of Bronte Mettlestone and the award-winning author of Feeling Sorry for Celia and A Corner of White, suitable for readers who loved A Most Magical Girl.

I was taken by Whisperers at 2pm, so I never pulled the lever for the laundry chute.
That’s what bothered me most.
This is way ahead in the story, though. A lot happened before that.

The town of Spindrift is frequented by pirates, Shadow Mages and charlatans. It’s also home to the Orphanage School, where Finlay lives with Glim, Taya and Eli. Just outside town is the painfully posh Brathelthwaite Boarding School, home to Honey Bee, Hamish and Victor, Duke of Ainsley. When the two schools compete at the Spindrift Tournament, stakes are high, tensions are higher, and some people are out to win at any cost. Before long, the orphans and the boarding school are in an all-out war.

And then Whispering Wars break out, and Spindrift is thrust onto the front lines. Children are being stolen, Witches, Sirens and a deadly magical flu invade the town, and all attempts to fight back are met with defeat.

Finlay, Honey Bee and their friends must join forces to outwit the encroaching forces of darkness, rescue the stolen children, and turn the tide of the war. But how can one bickering troupe outwit the insidious power of the Whisperers? And who are the two mysterious figures watching them from the shadows?

From the award-winning Jaclyn Moriarty comes a spellbinding tale of unlikely friendship, unexpected magic and competitive athletics.

  • No other than Harry Potter, I can just dream of the magical powers that are held between the book covers of this one which is so well told.

  • I just loved the Harry Potter books and it was Ron Weasley’s uncommanding performances with his wand that makes him my favourite. What would he have done without Hermione to get him out of sticky situations?!

  • Harry Potter of course! I grew up as the books were being released and they have always been special to me.

  • Little Dream

  • Hagrid from Harry Potter is my favourite character he is a bit clumsy but his heart is in the right place.

  • It would have to be Roald Dahl’s Matilda,
Her magic is fun and had us bewildered!
Magically moving objects using her brain,
She’d surprise us again and again!
A smart little girl who loves to read,
Giving meanies what they deserve guaranteed,
captivating us with her magic indeed!

  • Harry potter

  • Poppy Pendle, is my favourite character. Although she wants nothing to do with her magical powers, she deals with the common issues of life (Fitting in, communicating, dealing with mistakes & finding true friends). Also following her passion for baking. Such a great book, and will need to get a copy for my daughter when she is older.

  • Rose Hathaway from Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead. Love how she able to cope with the limitations she has as half human and Vampire. She does not let this stop her from practising what she should not know. Plus the romance is great.

  • Favourite character with magical powers is Harry Potters Dobbie

  • Peter Pan of course. He could fly and imagine a table of food and there it was… and best of all he never gets any older. Who wouldn’t love that magical power.

  • First one that springs to mind is Harry Potter. I’ve never read a single book or watched a single movie, but my kids went berserk for him, so I guess he’s pretty good

  • Matilda she is genuine and sweet and I love her and the story.

  • My favourite book with magical characters with powers would definitely be the Harry Potter series

  • My daughter loves maleficent ???? she loves her green eyes and turns into a dragon!!! She wants to be like her when she is older!!!!
