Perth experts are looking at what’s behind growing IVF rates and infertility problem.

One in six couples will need help to conceive, one in 25 children in Australia are born through IVF and one in seven children in Australia are born through in vitro for women 37 years and over.

Experts are putting it down to multiple factors, such as couples waiting until later in life to conceive and increased exposure to pollutants and chemicals, reports 9 news.

Perth fertility specialist Professor Roger Hart has conducted an early study which has revealed there may be some common items in the home that is contributing to increased fertility issues.

“There is preliminary data to suggest that exposures to plastics and environmental pollutants can have negative impacts on the egg and the sperm,” Prof. Hart revealed.

“Exposure to phthalates which are chemical found in plastics and also make up, of the mother, when we assess their sons sperm counts and testicular size, aged 20 years of age, they’re reduced.”

Phthalates can be found in cleaning products, make up, nail polish, hairspray and perfumes.

He is urging people to minimise exposure to products with the chemical.

“Exposure to cleaning fluids, minimising the use of make up and hair dye. other chemicals that we perhaps don’t think about. Plastics exposure, trying to minimise our exposure to those.”

  • Just another everyday product that we need to eliminate. If it affects us badly, imagine what it’s doing the environment!

  • The make up is a new one to me as I have never heard that it causes fertility issues

  • It is scarey the damage the human race is doing to the planet and the effects it is having on our long term health

  • There are so many reasons to cut down on chemicals and toxins.

  • I have heaps of friends who have gone through infertility but we’re all in our 30s. If kids are something you want it does seem sooner is better than later.

    • Yeah people said i was to young to start in my 20’s but now really grateful i did start in my 20’s cause i had so many problems.

  • I do believe the environment is causing more allergies and health issues than we’ve ever understood before. This may translate to fertility issues, I’m not sure. We had to go through IVF and the consensus of ‘unexplained infertility’ still irks me, but we didn’t have enough evidence to support any other theory.

  • Definitely chemicals and toxins are playing havoc on our health. There has been this evidence for years, but chemical manufacturers hide it. We need to get back to an organic, natural chemical free life as much as possible,. If interested check out a book by Anthony Williams “Medical medium’ he talks about infertility causes and what you can do.

  • I think it’s so important to be aware of products we use & not just the harm they can cause, such as infertility – not just for ourselves, but also our kids. I remember when I was pregnant with my first, and looking to see if Panadol is indeed safe, as recommended. There is some research also indicating the possibility of infertility for bub, especially in boys. Some things just aren’t worth the risk IF they can be avoided.

    • I agree with caution at all times. Lowering overall consumption and use of chemicals.

  • I married when I was 38yrs old and 3 miscarriages before I had our first child at age 40. Back then the gynecologist said we were certainly a fertile couple and had no reason to consider IVF , which we didn’t anyway. As for plastic and use of chemicals, i certainly think it’s good to cut down on that for multiple reasons.
