If your household is anything like mine, then with dinnertime always comes leftovers.

Try as I might I can never quite get the portions exact!

To be honest, I’m a Leftovers disaster!  Little plastic containers everywhere in the fridge and don’t get me started on little ziplock bags!

In my house leftovers generally suffer any one of the following fates …

  • the dog finds a little extra in his bowl that night (yes I know I’m not supposed to do it, but I sometimes do)
  • I put them in the freezer having all the right intentions of reusing them at a later date only to pull them out 6 months later completely unrecognisable
  • I take them to the office the next day, forget about them come lunchtime then end up throwing them out at the end of the week

Or more often than not, the boys on after dinner clear up duty dump them immediately into the bin ‘because they’ll never get used’.

The bottom line is I’m wasting food and that’s actually a tragedy.

A tragedy for my budget (food in the bin is money down the drain) but more importantly a tragedy for the environment – all that dumped food has to go somewhere doesn’t it?

  • The greatest appeal for pie fillings amongst Australian’s are beef casserole (63%), roast chicken (59%), lamb stew (57%), and roast beef (54%).
  • Most households (92%) throw away food that has been cooked but not eaten each week and 85% throw out fruit or vegetables that have gone off each week.
  • 72% of households end up throwing out food items because they are passed their use by date each week.

  • I used to put leftovers in the fridge and forget them but then I worked out how much food waste evvects my budget and then I changed and became very good at using as much as i could,

  • It is such a waste if we throw our leftovers away all the time. The only ones I don’t like keeping are the greens. That is because vegies by that time are already overcooked and it turns colour anyway . If we do have some left over , it is no more than 1 day as I think it is terrible having overcooked vegies for more than that . If you work , then having for lunch the next day saves money provided there is a microwave .

  • I just love left overs – when there cool in the freezer they go – they are such a life saver when Im not able or not in the mood to cook. Just go through my freezer every few weeks and grab a quick meal when its a busy week and dont have time get a meal going. 10min and dinner is served! Brilliant

  • I find that making a meal plan really saves me time and money. I don’t waste anywhere near as much food and it makes you think about leftovers as a meal and how/ when it will get eaten. It’s great!

  • I’m always throwing out old veggies and food from my freezer that I’ve forgotten about would love to try my curried sausages in a pie yum!

  • oh my anything really, I brought the pastry sheets and I was meant to complete this task but at the moment life gets so busy. I always seem to have too much pasta left over and I,m unsure of pasta pie lol
    I reckon a delicious home made shepherds pie or even a curry yum. I have a nice chicken, bacon, potato, and leek soup I have pureed, if this was less thin I think this would be amazing.
