Disgruntled Woolworths shopper noticed an extra charge on his receipt for using his own shopping bags.

Cairns customer, Jason Taylor, took to Facebook to vent his anger after discovering an eight-cent charge on his shopping.

His receipt shows ‘#BYO Bag’ priced at one cent each, for which he had brought eight.

“Go Woolworths. Charging us to use our own bags. Sneaky little…,” he wrote on Facebook.

“This is disgusting,” one user wrote.

“That’s absolutely terrible!” another comment said.

A Woolworths spokesperson told Yahoo7 News that the charge had been a technical glitch.

“This customer appears to have been impacted by a technical error during the switchover from the old Rewards offer on Wednesday,” the spokesperson said.

“We sincerely apologise to the customer for this error and ask them to keep their receipt so they can get this rectified by a store manager or service desk manager next time they’re in store.

“At Woolworths, our customers receive 30 Woolworths Rewards points for bringing their own reusable bags when shopping with us.”

His post has been shared over 16,000 times on social media.

Have you been caught? I must be honest and say I never even check!

  • Before the introduction of charges for bags some or all Foodland Supermarkets in SA had a system where if you took your own bags, you got a stamp on the cards you were provided with. When your card was full you got $1.00 off your next shopping docket. Over time you saved a few dollars. If I have to buy shopping bags (they do split after awhile – including the fabric ones and the cooler bags) I always cross the barcode off if it has one. Make sure you remove the tie where a label has been attached. Perhaps mark your bags in some way even if you do it on the inside of the bag. That way you have proof that you hve purchased it previously.

  • I was charged for bringing my own bags and at the end of the docket it was deducted. I received my bonus points for bringing my own bags as well. There is always a glitch on anything that has been newly introduced.

  • Ooh, I don’t shop at Woolies but just another glitch in the whole ‘bag’ debacle. Glad he checked his receipt.

  • I don’t think I would have even noticed this. Glad to see that it was just a glitch though.

  • It was all bull. If you read the comments on this post on Facebook, everyone is saying they get bonus points or it was deducted in total at very end

  • CLEARLY JUST A TECHNICAL ERROR, AS WOOLWORTHS REWARDS WITH POINTS FOR BRINGING YOUR OWN BAG. AND 8 CENTS IS NOTHING TO GET OUTRAGED ABOUT, BETTER SPARE YOUR ENERGY FOR REAL SERIOUS THINGS TO GET UPSET ABOUT.

  • I just checked my receipts and there was no BYO bag charge. Maybe only certain supermarkets do it. I checked my Coles and Woolies ones.

  • Things happy things happen, did the person go to the store and ask? They were not aware

  • It was a technical glitch- these things happen. Instead of trying to get 15 second of fame, the person should have just contacted the Woolworths in question and they would have refunded him his 8cents. Some people make such a big issue over such small things

    • I agree. Could’ve been easily fixed if he really wanted the eight cents refunded. It was a glitch, it happens

  • We received this a week or so ago before they were giving the bonus rewards points out but ours wqs a discount of 8cents for bringing our own bags…..

  • I have not been charged extra for bringing my own bag but added an extra 30 points to my reward card!

  • It should have been credited back on the bottom of the receipt

  • This is very naughty – a small amount of money, but I’d have complained too!
