Dad shares his top tips for what mums need after birth, including condoms. But not for THAT reason!

A user on parenting site Direct Advice for Dads included condoms on his list of must-have things to bring your wife in hospital.

Why you ask?

It’s no secret that a vaginal delivery can heavily impact “down there”. This dad’s go-to relief measure is a frozen, water-filled condom.

The glowing endorsement reads:

“Make sure you’re stocked up on condoms. Filled with water and frozen, they’re the perfect shape to rest in between new mum’s legs and ease a bit of pain and swelling.

“Don’t believe me? This is actually a thing. Shortly after giving birth in hospital, my wife was taken to a fridge full of frozen condoms.”

You simply lay it lengthwise in your knickers.

On an episode of The Doctors last month they discussed Vaginal Popsicles and if they really offered any relief.

Due to the swelling, bruises and tearing during childbirth, Dr. Landry explains that one technique involves filling a condom with water, freezing it and then applying to it to the outside of the vagina.

She recommends placing it between your body and a sanitary pad, which will absorb any leaking water. She stresses to not insert the frozen object it into your body, to not apply for too long or reuse the condom.

Rosie Waterland, writer and author, was a bit shocked after the recent birth of her new baby niece. She had fans sharing their own experience with vagina pops on her Facebook page.

One fan wrote, “My hospital had these nifty sachet things you soak then freeze. They come out as gently rounded cubes that you pop into your (huuuuuge) maternity pad to ease the swelling of the trauma below. Seriously, so good.”

Another said, ” Our hospital used zooper doopers. I still can’t look at them the same way.” (inserted into a pad people!)

Another comment read, “Much preferred to freeze dampened maternity pads. Less bulk haha.”

One reader was disappointed saying, “Geez I just got a rubber glove stuffed with ice…not the most comfortable but it did its job!”

This is one thing I must say I was never offered. Have I been ripped off?

  • Probably more comfortable that staff just putting ice there to reduce the swelling and bruising. A friend of mine wasn’t warned about the ice beforehand either.

  • Clever – in my day people didn’t talk about anything like this so it was unheard of. Lucky ladies now.

  • No, was never offered anything like this for delivery discomfort. I had haemorrhoids and was given ice for them
