A toddler has been left in a critical condition after his father attempted to kill him in a car accident.

Telling police he was unable to handle the pressures of parenthood, 29-year-old Nathan Weitzel placed his two-and-a-half-year-old son Isaiah in the car without a seatbelt.

He then drove down a suburban street in Colorado, USA, at speeds of up to 120km/h, hitting several cars along the way.

“I was trying to kill my son,” Weitzel told police following the crash.

The incident occurred just before midday on August 21 after Weitzel drove his son to a park.

A court statement said he then “left the park and drove around looking for a good place to crash the car and kill his son.”

Police were told Weitzel deliberately didn’t put Isaiah in a child seat and left him unbuckled.

The father has since admitted to using cocaine before the crash.

“The reason he wanted to kill Isaiah was because being a father was a big responsibility and he did not think he was man enough to raise a child,” an investigator told KHOU.

Isaiah has miraculously survived the crash, close to half of his body is in a cast and his movement has been severely limited. It is not yet known if there will be long-term damage.

  • If the Dad is addicted to cocaine no wonder he can’t be a good parent.
He will probably use his addiction as an excuse when he appears in court.
Institution with secure lockdown and enforced drug treatment and rehabilitation is the only place he should be with no visitors – no chance of anybody sneaking drugs into him

  • This is so hard to even contemplate – these parents shouldn’t have children.

  • MOMS – just a suggestion – maybe put a link to agencies to contact when the pressures of parenting are too great – same as they talk about lifeline on the news whenever they speak of someone that has taken their own life?

  • I wonder what supports they have available for people like this father – most people have someone to turn to or know a service to call, we all have moments where we think we aren’t good at parenting. Very sad to take this extreme behaviour

  • I’m glad the little child survived the crash. Incredible what the father did. What will happen to him now?

  • I hope the child will be removed from the father and I hope that the Father gets drug rehab help.

  • Stories like this make you question many things. Yes my heart breaks for the child but also for the father not thinkin he had anywhere else to turn. (Not si nuch in this case as drugs were involved )

  • Instead of getting help he decides to kill his son because he can’t handle ??!! What a sick, destructive and selfish way of thinking !

  • Sad that he didn’t feel good enough,mi think we can relate to that feeling. Sadder he was using cocaine and driving. Saddest still that he wanted to hurt his son
