The Northern Hospital has admitted making serious mistakes in the treatment of an 18-month-old girl who died there in 2014.

Doctors told Audrey Ebbage’s parents that the toddler was suffering from a virus, but days later an undiagnosed heart condition took her life. Christie Cooper reports for 7 News.

Her parents Angela and Matthew believe she would still be alive if the hospital had taken their concerns seriously.

She was diagnosed with croup, but after 3 days she went into cardiac arrest.

The hospital admitted Audrey’s blood pressure should have been recorded.

She should have been seen by a paediatrician to consider other possible diagnosis and an emergency call should have been made when her heart rate and breathing changed.

The parents were never given a chance to speak to the doctors who treated her baby girl.

Mum, Angela said her little girl was happy. “She was happy. She was happy all the time!”

Heartbreaking.

  • Heartbreaking. Poor little darling should still be here. As parents we trust the doctors know best and are doing everything to keep our babies well and safe – never think that they will misdiagnose resulting in their death :'(

  • How do parents recover from such a tragic error of judgement? I hope they receive free counselling. I hope the medical staff responsible learn from this huge error of judgement and it never happens again.
The inquest may not happen for awhile – anything up to 2 years. (there was a report about one recently They will either still be having counselling or there is a huge chance that they will need to have more.

  • Absolutely heartbreaking! So many health professionals dismiss parents very real concerns regarding their children. My son and his partner just spent the last 6 weeks trying to tell the health professionals they think their newborn is lactose intolerant. They kept being ignored, it’s colic, here take this! He’s now on lactose free formula and thriving!
