Hello!

Have you ever just wanted to get away for two days with your family but didn’t want it to be too complicated and you wanted to be able to experience something new? There is a city that is often left out of tours but I recently went to on a weekend trip and was not disappointed! It’s time to escape to Adelaide.

If there is possibly an entire week that you can take off, I suggest spending the weekend in Adelaide and then taking a tour on the Great Ocean Road from Adelaide to Melbourne, I didn’t do it on this trip but I have done it previously and it was such an amazing experience.

Here are some of the things I got to do there:

Shopping

The Adelaide Central Market is perfect for those that just want to relax and stroll through town. They mostly focus on the foods that you cook at home including fresh meat, seafood and vegetables. There are also many sweets stores, coffee shops, and even flower and bookshops.

Warmly referred to ‘The Heart of Adelaide,’ this large market is a great place to go to enjoy the local atmosphere and relax.

Kayak with Dolphins

Unfortunately you have to go a little bit out of town for this great adventure, but it is work the trip! Only 30 minutes outside of town my daughter and I went to go visit the dolphins at the Port Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary.

While there, you are able to rent a kayak to go play with the dolphins, if your kids are old enough, or you can take a guided tour to where you’ll see the dolphins, learn about Australia’s marine environment, and visit the ship graveyard just off the coast.

My daughter and I were able to bring lunch from the market with us and eat by the beach and watch people kayak and have a fantastic time with the dolphins.

Learning about Aboriginal Tribes

One of the most interesting aspects about Australia is the history of those that were first here, the Aboriginal people.

The South Australian Museum is amazing with the world’s largest collection of Aboriginal artifacts and the exhibits they have are awe inspiring.

Across the town, the Tandanya is a visual arts center that focuses on modern Aboriginal artwork and has a free entry as well. Seeing both of these museums will allow you to take a closer look at the Aboriginal culture, both history and current, and it is wonderful to experience.

  • You are not allowed to play with the dolphins as such. If the come close to you stop paddling and stay as still as possible. They may come up really close. There has been many injured from moving boats etc. Also you should not go fishing in the area with rods or nets. There has been some injured that way too. They can get fishing line tangled around them, swallowed or trapped and injured, even drowned in fishing nets as they haven’t able to go to the surface of the water. There is a sanctuary that looks after injured and sick dolphins, nurses them back to good health and if possible releases them back into the sea. I don’t know whether there is a charge to go in and see them. As far as I know it is funded by donations. There is a lot of places that are free or reasonably cheap to visit. There is / was a centre in Adelaide CBD that you can get tourist ideas of places you can visit free of charge.
