Authorities in South Carolina have charged 27-year-old Angela Blackwell with homicide by child abuse, claiming she placed her newborn son in the refrigerator and failed to seek medical help until she removed him three hours later.
She was arrested on Monday, nearly six months after her son died. Investigators said they have spent that time taking statements and getting forensic tests done on the baby.
Medical staff were unable to revive the baby, who died from hypothermia with asphyxiation.
Appearing in court over her crimes, Angela, who also has a three-year-old son, was unable to be granted bail and faces a life sentence in prison.
The baby’s grandfather, Billy Lewis, maintains Angela is innocent.
‘She’s always good to the kids, anybody’s kids,’ says Billy. ‘We know she didn’t do it, but we don’t know who did.’
Reports say the boy’s father, who is not charged in connection to his death, has a lengthy arrest record. Jeffery Paul Lewis, 35, has theft convictions in South Carolina dating back to 2005 and served more than two years in prison after a probation violation, Corrections Department spokeswoman Stephanie Givens said.
Last month we also shared a Texas man has been charged with causing the death of his six-month-old daughter by leaving her in a hot car and then putting her in the refrigerator.
