A Victorian Coroner will deliver a finding on the death of a mother who died after a home birth more than four years ago.

Caroline Lovell, 36, died just hours after delivering her second child, a healthy daughter, in a birthing pool in her home.

Two midwives were in attendance for the birth in the home, after which Caroline is believed to have suffered a fatal post-partum haemorrhage.

The inquest has previously heard she is estimated to have lost three litres of blood following the delivery.

Caroline died at the Austin Hospital in January 2012 after medical assistance was sought for her fatal condition.

Coroner Peter White is due to deliver a finding on the death today.

  • I prefer to be in a hospital where experts are there to monitor and treat you

  • It’s the thought of things like this, things that can go wrong that will require medical intervention in a hurry, that put me right off home births

  • I heard of a Mother who was haemorraging and also needed stitches. They left her alone in her room for over 2 hours before they returned to do the suturing. They also left her baby in with her but not close enough for her to be able to move her arm to touch him. She had to have blood transfusions.
One very good reason not to have a home birth.

  • This is very scary. But it’s not only home births that this can happen. I know someone who was losing a lot of blood following a csection and the nurses said it was normal when it wasn’t. She had to have a hysterectomy to save her life

    • But at least she was in a hospital where medical intervention was on hand to help. Sure, it can happen to anyone, it’s having he on hand that makes the difference
