A Queensland father has been granted bail after poisoning his baby girl with ‘hillbilly heroin’.

A 22-year-old man gave the two month old a strong painkiller OxyContin – also known as ‘hillbilly heroin’ –  to stop her from crying so he could have some ‘time out’.

The baby was taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital and currently remains there in a stable condition.

Acting Detective Inspector Greg Aubort, of the Gold Coast Child Protection Investigation Unit, said they had a strong case against the man.

‘We’ll allege he put the child down and was looking for some sleep, some time to himself for a hobby project he had. The child became unsettled and he made the decision to resettle the child with this drug,’ he said.

‘There are foreseeable consequences. This is a restricted and controlled drug, it is restricted for a reason, it’s dangerous and at a high level of prescription for pain relief.

‘The parents were the ones who contact triple 0 in the first place and organised the QAS response and in that sense, the correct decision was made… the incorrect decision was administering the drug in the first place and of course at such a grossly negligent level.’

We hope the little bubba makes a full recovery.

UPDATE 27 January:

The young Gold Coast father who sedated his baby daughter with ‘hillbilly heroin’ to stop her from crying has been granted bail.

The 22-year-old appeared in Southport Magistrates Court on Wednesday charged with one count of administering poison with intent to harm and possession of a controlled substance.

During the bail hearing the court heard the father had gone home to google the side effects of OxyContin before texting his partner at the hospital to suggest the baby’s stomach should be pumped.

OxyContin, also known as ‘hillbilly heroin’ is a powerful narcotic pain reliever, which is similar to morphine in its effects.  It is commonly used by addicts as an alternative to heroin.

The father has been granted bail on the condition he cannot contact his daughter unless under the supervision of the Department of Child Safety.
UPDATE 27 October

Father who drugged baby with ‘hillbilly heroin’ spared more jail over ‘nutty experiment’.

A Gold Coast father who poisoned his own daughter with a drug dubbed ‘Hillbilly Heroin’ has avoided more jail time, reports 7 news.

The father pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm after dissolving oxycontin in a bottle and feeding it to the two-month-old.

The Crown said the child would have died without medical intervention.

The judge labelled the father’s actions a ‘nutty experiment’ but granted him parole.

  • Another let down by the justice system.

  • I can’t believe that he could do that to his child just to get some time to himself. I just hope that the little one doesn’t suffer any side effects from his stupid action

  • I had to read this a couple of times to believe it was true. Mortified. Horrified. And this just increased when I learned the man was granted parole. In what world would it be okay to give a baby heroin? My God. He should not be allowed near any children for his stupdity, drug use, and lack of any intelligence.

  • Thats disgraceful. I don’t know how anyone could even think of giving something like that to a baby! Yes, we’d all like some me time as parents, but that’s definitely not the way to go about it.

  • How ignorant.
Some people aren’t very educated and informed, that sure could be the case here. I hope they keep this couple in the picture and that they get help & supervision & education with their parenting.

  • Some people should not have children – another stolen generation coming up with these imbeciles.

  • Parents need to understand that babies take priority.

  • Hopefully if he even considers such a thing in the future, he does his googling BEFORE making the stupid and dangerous choice. Not after.

  • I am stunned, but relieved that they got medical attention for the poor child. Education is definitely needed on parenting and consequences for such actions. Hoping the little one is recovering, children need attention and hobbies can wait!

  • I hope the baby makes a full recovery…..and not returned to the care of the parents.
We hand an incident a few years ago where the Mum put Methadone in her baby’s bottle so she would go to sleep and stop crying when she was teething and her gums were really red and inflamed. It was a teenager sibling who discovered the baby wasn’t breathing and called 000. The family was known to the Police. When the Ambulance arrived at the hospital they didn’t open the doors so nursing staff ran out and opened them to find paramedics desperately trying to revive the baby. the nursing staff already had cardiac consultants on standby but there was nothing they could do. The extra emergency response vehicle had been left at the house and they were doing CPR while the driver kept going. The Dr. called it as dead on arrival as there was nothing more could be done. The nurses waiting were devastated as they had never experienced such unnecessary tragedy. Some of the family were addicts.
