MAN jailed for more than four years after inflicting life-threatening head injuries on his baby son.

The 41-year-old man, who cannot be identified, was found guilty by a jury of causing grievous bodily harm to his, then seven-month-old baby boy, at the family’s home in August 2014, reports 7 news.

The WA District Court heard on Wednesday that he admitted to police he was “frustrated and tired”, and gave the baby a “little smack” after also smacking him on the legs.

The father said the baby then became weak and went into a trance.

Judge David Parry noted the father had shown no remorse and tried to minimise the seriousness of his conduct.

“You shook or hit the head of a completely vulnerable, defenceless baby and you grossly abused your parental authority,” he said.

“The injuries you caused were very significant and life-threatening, and could well have resulted in permanent visual loss.

“Although it appears, thankfully, that (the baby) physically recovered from the injuries, he is being currently monitored closely by a paediatrician for any developmental delays or changes to his health, which may result from the brain injury, and it is very likely that when he’s old enough, he will require ongoing counselling and support.”

The father was sentenced to four years and four months in jail, and must serve at least two years and four months behind bars before he can be eligible for parole.

  • A bit conflicting how the title says: Father jailed for a “little smack” and then that he is jailed for more than four years after inflicting life-threatening head injuries on his baby son….
When the baby indeed had life-threatening injuries i found 4 years a little !

  • It was obviously more than just a tap with one finger to attract a baby’s attention. I have done that in fun -not as a smack with my whole hand. Life threatening injuries is definitely violence. Even mild Head trauma without concussion can be difficult for a an adult to recover from in under a week
