The father of a Canberra student who died yesterday when a car exploded outside the school has been remembered as “a down-to-Earth, good bloke”.

The St Clare of Assisi Catholic school in Conder, in the city’s south, will remain closed until Monday after the 50-year-old man was killed while picking his child from after-school care just before 5pm yesterday.

ACT emergency crews were called to the school to reports of a vehicle explosion and found the man in a critical condition.
Paramedics treated the man at the scene before he was taken to hospital where he later died.

A number of children were inside at an after-hours program when the explosion killed a father parked outside, the principal has confirmed.

Support will be offered to students at St Clare of Assisi Primary School in Conder where police remain at the scene attempting to determine the cause of the blast, reported ABC news.

“There were quite a lot of children here at outside-of-school-hours care, but our staff did a brilliant job in ensuring those kids were immediately removed,” he said.

“When it occurred we had a couple of staff very quickly out there offering some immediate assistance. There were staff and parents.”

Crews from Worksafe ACT and ACT Policing worked into the night to investigate the blast.

  • Oh my gosh, how horrific. I’m hoping none of the children had the misfortune to witness this accident, it would scar them for life

  • I am worried what caused the explosion. e.g. was it caused by oil or fuel leaking onto parts such as the exhaust or other mechanical parts….or fault? Sometimes even when vehicles are regularly serviced by qualified mechanics things can be missed.
Thinking of those who have lost their Dad, Husband/Partner, other relatives and friends. I hope they receive all the support they will need now and in the future.
