Hello!

A student who should have been in isolation was sent to school and now hundreds of schoolchildren are under threat of being exposed to coronavirus.

The child, who is in year 1, is a student at Oran Park Public School in Sydney’s south-west and 7 News reports that they recently travelled to mainland China.

As soon as teachers were made aware of the trip, the child was sent home.

Hopefully Not Too Late?

School Principal, Donna Shevlin, has sent a letter to parents explaining:

“A student who recently returned from China has attended school within the medical advice provided by the NSW Health of 14 days self-isolation for people who may have been exposed to the coronavirus,”

“Once aware of this situation, the school immediately excluded the student from school for 14 days, with a return date of 10th February.”

NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard previously requested that parents keep kids at home if they had travelled to China within the last fortnight.

This measure was voluntary and evidently not all parents felt it was necessary to take the warning on board.

However, there is at present no indication that the student is suffering from coronavirus.

A Risk

But we do know that the virus is known to have a slow incubation period and it could take up to 14 days for symptoms to appear after being exposed to coronavirus.

The student’s teacher is currently at work and the principal is assuring parents that they are following strict hygiene protocol.

There are 1,525 students enrolled at Oran Park Public School.

Latest Numbers

The news comes as a fifth case of the deadly coronavirus has been confirmed in Queensland, bringing the nation’s total to 15.

More than 28000 people have infected globally and 563 people have died.

  • I work with special needs children and from time to time we have kids with covid turn up at school. Parents are still not getting the fact they need to keep them home.

  • This is turning out to be a big problem – kids spread it so easily, and schools are hotspots fr new outbreaks.

  • Do hope all is well with the rest of the students at your school.

  • What is wrong with these parents? This child, the entire family, should have been in 14 days isolation. What were they thinking to send this child to school? Although I’m betting if the kid went to school, the parents most likely went to work

  • Why would you send your kids to school and put others at risk. I am worried as one of my daughters friends was in China and it at school

  • WOW! I’m not concerned personally but do not of a couple stranded on the Diamond Princess cruise so I’m following their situation with interest.

    • I have been following the story about the cruise ship.

  • Some people dont care then send their child to school and dont care about the other kids

  • Sadly we can not control all of the virus once it got out of China it spread. Regardless of all the safety measures people slip through. Hopefully the child and other students will be okay.

  • Quarantines are put in place for a reason. Hopefully no-one at the school has contracted this virus. The mother who sent her child to school when they should have been kept at home needs to be ready for a lot of backlash. I for one would be very angry and would make sure she knew just what I thought of her blatant ignorance of the quarantine. Fingers crossed every one is okay

  • It’s people such as this that are helping to spread this virus. Ignorant selfish people who choose to ignore professional advice. I wouldn’t be surprised if its an Asian family, they probably had to go to work and didn’t have anyone to look after the child. No, I’m not overly worried about it as yet. 28 000 cases and only 500 and something deaths, all but one in China. I think it’s yet another virus that will affect the old, the young and those with existing medical issues. A 2% death rate isn’t huge. A big worry is just how truthful the Chinese are being with the rest of the world though. I don’t think they’re being 100% open and honest about it, I think it’s worse then they’re letting on.

    • Yes it’s definitely not an open country / a country you can fully trust !

  • That is so selfish of the parents to send them to school and risk 1500 other students and families

  • hopefully this will not result in the virus having being spread to the children

  • I can’t believe people would not take the necessary precautions to minimise the risks, especially after advise given by heath ministers. Very selfish of the parents to of sent the kid to school after being in China.
