A fire at a childcare centre yesterday which started while children were still inside may have been deliberately lit.

Smoke was coming from the building when firefighters were called to the Toowoomba, Goodstart Early Learning Child Care Centre at Rudd Street in Drayton about 1:30pm.

Forty-one children and nine staff were evacuated from the building, reports ABC news.

Firefighters found a fire in a store room and quickly extinguished it.

No-one was injured but police said it appeared a second fire had been extinguished at the other end of the building before emergency services arrived “suggesting it may have been deliberately lit”.

A crime scene has been established at the centre and forensic officers are investigating.

  • Hope they soon find out whether it was deliberate and who might have started the fire – awful to think it could happen again in a child care centre.

  • One would hope this wasn’t deliberate but the fact there was indeed 2 fires it scertainly looks suspicious. When/if the culprit is caught I hope the punishment is enough to justify not just arson but putting lives at risk (attempted murder)

  • Hope the truth comes out. That would be awful when it was deliberately put on fire !
