Children with severe epilepsy will be given first access to medicinal cannabis from early 2017, following the passing of historic legislation in the Victorian parliament.

Victoria is the first state to make medicinal cannabis available to people in exceptional circumstances, with children as a special focus.

Health Minister Jill Hennessy announced yesterday the government’s small-scale, strictly controlled cannabis cultivation trial is to commence.

“It’s absolutely heartbreaking to see families having to choose between breaking the law and watching their children suffer – and now … they won’t have to,” she said on Tuesday.

The Bill creates a legal framework to enable the manufacture, supply and access to safe and high quality medicinal cannabis products in the state.

An Office of Medicinal Cannabis will also be set up to oversee the manufacturing of the drug and all clinical aspects of the framework.

  • This is such a wonderful leap forward. I’ve only heard good things regarding the use of medical marijuana in the treatment of seriously ill people. I hope it continues to spread and help even more people

  • It may well save the lives of children and adults with uncontrolled Epilepsy, especially those that have had no relief from other medications. Some have to be resucitated quite regularly. Others lose consciousness for up to an hour at a time, injure themselves even if asleep in their beds, fall to a floor or hit something solid on the way to the floor as well and fracture bones, split skin on various parts of your body. It also assists with other illnesses. In some cases it relieves the pain from Cancer.
