A five-year-old girl has been raped after she accidentally walked into the wrong public toilets in central NSW.

The girl and her mother were at a park on Woodward Road, Orange, when the girl accidentally went into the male public toilet block on Friday.

When the girl’s mother went to get her, the five-year-old told her a man had sexually assaulted her, police say.

Police were called and searched for a 37-year-old man without success until he was found in Moad Street in Orange about 4pm on Saturday.

He was charged with having sex with a child under 10 and was refused bail to face Orange Bail Court on Sunday.

More details to come.

Every two hours in Australia, a child is sexually harmed, according to child protection advocacy group Bravehearts.

1 in 5 children in Australia will be sexually harmed in some way by their 18th birthday. That’s 59,000 Australian children each year.

Recently we shared the story of a Four-year-old girl who was sexually assaulted by nine-year-old boy.

We also reported recently on two, YES TWO, stories of school assaults. An intellectually disabled 6 year old primary school girl who was lured into the school toilets and abused by two male students while two others stood guard! And two 12-year-old boys have been charged with raping a 6-year-old girl at a school.

Some great tips to teach our children to be aware and stay safe include,
Make time to talk
Talk about what being safe means and what it feels like
Teach children that their body is theirs
Help your child to make a list of adults they feel safe with

Have clear boundaries for personal privacy in your home so that children learn this is a normal part of life.

This includes:
•respecting a child’s ‘no’ to being touched
•not making them kiss someone if they don’t want to. They might want to shake hands instead
•giving them privacy in the toilet or shower as long as it’s safe.

Safety in public places

Teach children to avoid risks away from home, including:
•not going off alone
•being alert to what’s going on around them
•running to where you are, or to a group of people, if a stranger approaches them.

If they walk to school, make sure they:
•always walk with others
•keep close to fences and away from the road
•go into the nearest shop or front yard of a house if they are scared. If really scared, knock on the door and ask the person to call home but don’t go inside.

  • We need to change how we refer to people. The article says “Police were called and searched for a 37-year-old man” ….. This is wrong. No Man would ever do such a thing. The article should read “Police were called and searched for a 37-year-old male coward” …
Men do not and never would rape anyone. Not a child, not a female, not a male. A Man would not rape.

  • Im sorry but who lets their 5 year old go to a public toilet alone. I wouldn\’t let my 5 year old even go into a public female toilet alone. I feel for what this little one has gone through. The parent should face charges as well.

  • This is very distressing, you really need to place close attention to your child’s whereabouts.

  • What that poor little girl must be going through is horrendous. I’m wondering why Mum didn’t go with her.

  • How awful !!
Sows how important it is not to let our small children go unsupervised to the public toilet.

  • Terrible thing to have happened – but why did the girls mum let her go alone into the wrong toilet?

  • I am shocked that her Mum let her going into the toilet unassisted. A guy I know hated taking his little girls shopping with him in case they needed to go to the toilet. What would he do? Let them go into the ladies alone or take them into the mens. Ladies feel unsafe if a man stands outside the ladies’ toilet waiting for his little daughter (even school age) to come out of the toilet outer door.
There was 2 girls abducted who let go to the toilet alone at the Adelaide Oval quite a few years ago. They have never been found.

  • Toilets are dangerous places. In the UK middle aged women were raped in train station facilities etc. IN THEIR OWN GENDER toilet. Rapists would lock themselves in other cubicles etc. and then assault. Before using a toilet on your own I learnt (1) you should always check if anyone is hanging around outside or can see you go in – this is good if they are ‘nice’ people about and bad if there are ‘odd/suspicious’ people about; (2) before you go in is there anyone else in there, does anything look suspicious about the block; (3) while you are in the cubicle, you should listen to see if anyone else has come in, are you prepared to run/fight if they have come in. Terrifying but toilets are dangerous in many continents, and Australia is relatively lucky to most of the time be quiet and peaceful. Yes look after children too but also YOURSELF!
