The Mitchell Park man is currently in custody and assisting police with their enquiries.
Ballarat Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating the incident and urge any witnesses to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
UPDATE: Monday 23 November
It has been reported today that the young girl has been updated to a stable condition at the Ballarat Base Hospital.
She is believed to have suffered stab wounds in a number of areas, including her upper body.
It is believed the man who was arrested for the attack lives at the same complex, but is not related to the young girl.
“Police are currently conducting a door knock of the area in the hopes of speaking to witnesses,” Senior Sergeant Robinson said on Sunday.
Apparently it could be some time before the man in custody is interviewed, “because of exceptional circumstances”.
It is believed residents of the low-cost residential facility are believed to include people with disabilities.
