Footy star shares a touching photo of new baby son but fans were quickly outraged by the seemingly harmless image.

Former All Black, Matthew Ridge, welcomed his first child with Chloe Liggins on the morning of New Year’s Eve.

‘After nine months of cooking in the oven, our little Kenzo Axel Ridge blessed our world,’ Ms Liggins wrote according to New Zealand Herald.

The new baby was photographed asleep on his stomach as he laid peacefully on a white blanket.

In the background, two dogs can be seen out of focus but laying on the couch behind the newborn, fuelling outrage among some fans.

‘Get those dogs in the background out of there. They don’t look too happy. Best to be on [the] safe side. Lovely photo of bubs,’ one person wrote.

‘Nice photo, the dogs look scary,’ another wrote.

Many people suggested the parents should keep the ‘beautifully dangerous breed’ away from their newborn because they ‘don’t belong near young kids much less babies’.

What do you think? Did your keep your pets away from your new baby? Or is it important to encourage them to adjust to their new little human?

  • Someone was right there taking the photo. I think we can assume that the baby is not left alone with the dogs

  • Seems to me that a parent is there – how else could the phot be taken? – so there is no need for anyone to worry as the dogs know their master is in the room with all of them.

  • Dogs are fine as long as they’re a,ways supervised when around the baby

  • I don’t see a problem as someone was there taking the photo. I’m sure that if their baby was alone the dogs would not be there. Love the photo by the way

  • The baby is laying on the couch asleep. I don’t think that anyone would leave a baby asleep on the couch alone, as it could fall off. I’m sure that when you watch the baby, you’ll watch the dogs, so all seems fine to me.

  • I imagine the baby may actually have been there to take the photo. I know people with staffies with children. One would have a look if the baby cried and walk out of the room but he had to have a look. he never touched the baby, never licked her, in the early stages he didn’t worry much about smelling him either. When the baby was older and asleep in her rocker which had specially fitted adjusted safety harness in it. He gave her his ball that he loved to play with. He put it on the rocker very gently – not touching the baby. So, so funny and cute to watch. We weren’t planning on the baby sleeping in the rocker.

  • i think as long as you are with the children when dogs are about then thats fine this photo is harmless the rule is be with kids at all times otherwise put the animals outside while kids are playing

  • I dont see the problem at all. I am sure the parents were watching at all times. The dogs looked totally uninterested-I own a staffy and know the look. They were in the background not in direct contact. I wonder if they werent Staffies the same fuss would be made. Let us not forget that pets are part of the family. Do we not make the effort to introduce siblings to new borns why not our pets.

  • It’s not worth the risk with dogs, ever. When pet dogs do bite/attack, the owners never say “Oh yes, we knew they would…” It’s always “they are so gentle and loving and have never hurt anyone…”.

  • Yes the owner can judge the best if his pets are trustworthy. Our pets can be wonderful and caring !
I was just reading this story of this caring heroic pet saving the life of a baby in the freezing cold !

  • I think it all depends on the dogs. The owner should be able to judge their character. I didn’t have a pet when my daughter was born, but I wouldn’t have had any problems leaving my current dog with her, because he’s a sweetie and I’m sure he’d never hurt anyone.

  • these dogs used to be referred to as “nanny dogs” because of how protective of the kids they can be. I know my parent’s dog used to stand guard over my daughter’s cot when she was a bub. I would have thought the main concern would have been how close to the edge of the couch not the dogs, clearly the baby is being supervised and watched on by someone

  • Wow, people will find anything to judge on. It’s not like the baby is in the room alone. They are simply taking a photo. We had our dogs around the kids and I’m sure millions of other families do to.

  • It appears to be a staged photo – I’m sure they are very mindful of the dogs around the baby at all times ….

  • people need to stop judging. I’m surprised people were quick to judge about the dogs, how about how close the baby is to the edge of the couch….ohh my so what, its a photo they want to create and share with everyone. don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.
