We have some storage cupboards from IKEA which come with colourful containers that slide into it like a drawer. Easy to label for great overview for what goes where.
Involve your child but I’m all about storage. Tubs and boxes for everything. And labelled. And teach your child how to put things away and where to put them.
I would go through their toys and get rid of any that are damaged or they have outgrown them. Then I’d leave out a select few and put them in their toyboxes. From then on, I told them any I found on the floor would be given away and they would not be getting any more toys. After losing a couple of their favourites I found everything put away when they’d finished playing with them. This may work for you. Wish you luck
I’ve started a reward chart incentive for my kids. Each day I check their rooms before bed and if tidy they get a sticker, there are also other tasks to earn rewards. Once they achieve 50 they get a special experience of some sort like going to the movies. Also, every Saturday night they get pizza, movies and popcorn at home but I won’t put a movie on unless everything is tidy.
Make a game for children – which ever one cleans up his/her toys first gets a [biscuit, lolly, star, 20c].
This always worked for me and I always made sure that the toys were only in our sunroom and they weren’t allowed to play with toys in our lounge so guests never saw the mess in the first place.
1. Go through them and get rid of broken ones
2. Put some away and do rotation of toys
3. Get fun storage
4. Kids need to pack away at the end of day – make it a game, set a timer
Toy rotation for sure, I store a lot of toys in my kids wardrobe and then mix it up regularly. The storage tub unit for Ikea is also a game changer, makes finding a spot for the toys easy.
Do it in stages.
1. Set aside a weekend to dedicate to the task.
2. Go through everything in the room. Make piles. a) no longer useable, b) Not used and could be given to friends, sold off, given to vinnies. c) things that need to be washed/cleaned, d) things that can be put away for younger children e) things child plays with sometimes f) things child plays with regularly. Get child to help with this process so they feel included.
3. Follow through with the intent of the piles.
4. Assess what will be used and how to store. Go buy storage containers if you haven\’t already got them.
5. Store so child can see items and is able to get them when wanted.
6. Make putting away a part of child\’s regular chores and reward for doing so with a point system that the child can choose reward from a number of options
Go through the toys and the toys that are too young for your kids need to be given to friends with that age group or taken to your nearest op shop or toy library. Storage such as Trofast by Ikea can make things very organised and label them…not 100% necessary.
Ask your children to clean up after playing with toys. If this doesn’t work then at the end of each afternoon have a clean up. Even if you have to make it a game “who can clean up quickly.
First thing I would do is a toy cull, then get storage that’s easy to organise and makes it easier to clean up. Maybe label tubs, use pictures, to help little ones to know where things go?
Wish I had an answer also.
I clean a room and as soon as my toddler walks into it, it’s back to looking like a hurricane hit!!!
I’m guessing the only way is to keep things minimal, like not to have so many toys and things. That way say if you only had a couple of toys it won’t look as bad as having say, 10 things or more all over the floor.
