A couple have pleaded guilty to endangering their baby after she was found to have cocaine in her system after feeding.

Krystin Lisaius and husband Somchai Lisaius’s fourth-month-old daughter ingested the drug through her mum’s breast milk.

The Tucson Weekly reports that the pair face two years in prison.

She was taken to hospital on May 15 after her eyes “were rolling into the back of her head” while she was being breast fed.

The couple refused to allow a blood test on the baby but eventually urine tests and a toxicology screening showed she had cocaine in her system.

Krystin Lisaius initially denied using cocaine but later admitted that she had snorted the drug while hosting a party on May 14.

She confessed that she didn’t think her daughter would be harmed if she waited 12 hours after taking the drug to feed the baby, the Tucson Weekly reported.

On May 16 police found 1.59 grams of cocaine and a scale inside their home.

The pair currently have limited access to their child.

What should I know about illegal drugs and breastfeeding?
•Drugs pass from your bloodstream into your breast milk and affect your baby’s health. Some examples of illegal drugs are cocaine, heroin, LSD, marijuana, methamphetamine (meth), and phencyclidine (PCP). Your milk production may decrease. Your baby’s growth may be affected, or he may not gain weight as he should.

•If you have used drugs in the past, do not start using them again after your baby is born. If you have not used drugs or alcohol for at least 3 months, you may be able to breastfeed. You may need to give samples of urine for tests. If the tests show that you are not using drugs, you may be able to breastfeed. Ask your caregiver if it is safe for you to breastfeed your baby.

•Stop breastfeeding if you use drugs again. If you started using drugs again while breastfeeding, stop breastfeeding and see your caregiver right away. Your baby should be fed formula from a bottle.

  • I am almost certain the baby will suffer from withdrawal before she recovers.

  • Disgusting! Don’t believe at all that her using while hosting a party was the only time considering the police found nearly 2grams of cocaine in the house later on.

  • What on earth!? How could she be so stupid

  • That is horrible. That poor baby anything could have had happened to her. Drugs stay in your system a lot longer than 12 hours. Some of them stay in your system for months.

  • Poor baby! I agree that breast milk is best, however it does depend on what the mother eats or drinks though. You need to be responsible, not just while you’re pregnant but after!

  • Poor little girl! The mother was surely quite irresponsible!

  • You would think the mother would know better to do drugs and breastfeed.
