A four-year-old boy has been sentenced to life in jail for committing murders when he was aged just one year old.

Was it all a mistake?

Ahmed Mansour Karni was convicted of four counts of murder, eight counts of attempted murder, vandalising security property and threatening soldiers and police officers in a military court in Cairo.

He was not in court when he was convicted.

His defence lawyer, Faisal al-Sayd, said Ahmed’s name was added to the list by mistake.

He said the court did not pass the boy’s birth certificate to the judge to show that he was born in September 2012.

“The child Ahmed Mansour Karni’s birth certificate was presented after state security forces added his name to the list of accused, but then the case was transferred to the military court and the child was sentenced in absentia in an ensuing court hearing,” Mr al-Sayd told the Jerusalem Post. “This proves that the judge did not read the case.”

Egypt has been ruled by a military dictatorship under President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi since 2013.

Another Egyptian lawyer, Mohammed Abu Hurira, said the case showed that the “Egyptian scales of justice are not reversible” and that “there is no justice in Egypt”.

“Logic committed suicide a while ago. Egypt went crazy. Egypt is ruled by a bunch of lunatics,” he said.

I have no words! That poor child.

  • What the heck? Utterly ridiculous, sounds like a circus, a very scary and sinister circus.

  • Absurd but that’s how unjust the system is. The police have quotas for catching criminals so they will grab an unlucky soul and arrest him just to make the quota. This case is beyond ridiculous though.

  • Surely not, surely they won’t put such a young child in jail. Is he even fully toilet trained?
Surely the sentence can be reversed.

  • Did I read right 4 and in jail what the is going on he is a child, if he did all that who trained him? Who? And where are they in all this? And why didn’t they realise his age or even gotten to prove his age to the court or even military. And what happens from here? I hope he gets let out and I hope none of what he did was true.

  • Utter madness. It just shows you that military dictatorships have no consideration for justice and these type of regimes will stop at nothing to keep in power even if it means jailing innocent children.

  • No!! How can this even be possible? How can they not even review the case? This is terrible!!

  • Wow how could they even let this happen.

  • Why wasn’t his Birth Certificate presented in Court??? Under the circumstances the baby should have been taken to the court hearing. They baby not even be walking yet. Corruption at its all time abuse. A case for the United Nations or Amnesty International to get involved in.
