What if I told you that you had won an all-expenses paid vacation at a hotel for two whole weeks?

Would you be ecstatic? Or sceptical?

Perhaps I don’t get out much, or maybe I get overly excited about the smallest of things- but either way, the very thought of a two week all expenses paid hotel adventure sounded thrilling to me!

Holiday Afterparty

“The Holiday Afterparty” is what I described it as to my husband and his parents, although my in-laws most certainly did not share in my enthusiasm!

How often does anyone get to stay in a hotel and have everything provided for them, everything taken care of for two weeks and not have to worry about a single thing?

It’s like winning an all-expenses paid mini holiday!

The more I spoke, the more distressed my in-laws became.

Forced Lockdown

You see their return flights to Australia at the end of March were cancelled. Then they planned on returning home after the 15th of April, however, the thought of being in lockdown in a hotel is not what they were planning on when they arrived home at all.

Try as I may to entice them with how wonderful it would be to just relax for two whole weeks and have everything done for them, albeit within the confinement of a hotel room, they could not see the beauty of it at all.

Prison

“It would be like living in a jail” my mother-in-law argued.

Admittedly, I suppose the lack of freedom to travel as one pleases would seem quite limiting at first, but what if you used that time to catch up on reading or learning something online?

They would still have access to all of their electronic devices and perhaps the hotel might even provide wifi.

The time could be used to catch up on sleep. Rebalancing after jet lag could potentially take up three out of the fourteen days.

There would still be phone calls, television, heck they might even have access to newspapers!

No matter which angle I took I wasn’t going to be able to promote this to them as the spectacular opportunity that I saw it to be.

Freedom Was More Important!

No, they wanted their freedom. Not this 14 day self isolation inconvenience!

They want to be able to return to Australia, to be able to go to their own home, where they aren’t on guarded lockdown for their mandatory isolation period.

Like many people, they want to be free to live their lives. Not necessarily following the restrictions as strictly as what is enforced.

And this is probably the very reason why we have such strict regulations in place!

I feel for them, honestly I do. The life of a social butterfly would be incredibly challenging during a global pandemic.

Isolation Nightmare

In fact, I don’t believe they have ever been at home for even a 24 hour period. So the thought of 14 days must be a nightmare for them.

It is not anyone’s right to put others’ lives at risk though and the quarantine period is necessary for the safety and health of everyone.

If you’ve been on holidays overseas that is absolutely wonderful for you, but no one forced you to go. This is why it’s incredibly important that when you do return home you respect the mandatory regulations which have been put in place to save lives, not just of your immediate family and friends, but all of us, as a community.

If we feel we can’t observe the 14 day isolation period, hopefully the penalties serve as a firm reminder of the seriousness of this criminal offence.

Fourteen days doesn’t seem like much when you consider that so many have lost their loved ones to COVID-19 for a lifetime.

  • I think I would have been quite fine. As long as I had my books with me, internet and a tv…..all good.

  • My friend has just gone through this, and the room was dirty when she got there with her 1.5 year old, and they dont do cleaning in the room for the 14 days she was there. Her daughter lost weight as the food coming to her wasnt suitable and with no toys or anything to keep a toddler amused, I;m guessing it wouldn’t have been much fun! There was also no balcony or anything, so she was inside with no fresh air etc for the whole time as well which would be hard

  • Can’t believe how selfish some people are. Staying for 2wks in a 4-5 Star Hotel and they complain. You were more than happy to spend your time & money overseas though hey… We don’t want or need anything passed onto us from another country or tour potential COVID 19.. I am sure your family would be unhappy if you died or got the Coronavirus

  • I can’t believe that so many people complained …..
I would love 2 weeks in a swanky hotel all expenses paid.
I would use the time to catch up on sleep, pamper myself a little, order my meals and watch some tv. Heck, I think I could do more than 2 weeks!! The back story is that we are doing something to help someone else whilst at the same time, protecting ourselves……. what a bonus!

  • I would welcome the stay as it is just a precaution and a way of ensuring my family and the public is safe. I am not a social butterfly though so I would feel quite comfortable and wouldn’t feel cooped up.

  • The amount of complaints I’ve seen from people in quarantine have been huge. I know it wouldn’t be ideal, but for the safety of others, it is only 14 days. Not a large amount of time in the scheme of things. But I’m not sure the process has been handled well in some places. Mental health is very important too.

  • It would be wonderful to be waited on for 2 weeks in a lovely hotel for free. I’d be over the moon and able to catch up on a lot of my reading.

  • I’d actually be okay with it – the best way to lay in bed all day and watch netflix without being judged…

  • I wouldn’t argue one bit! It would be great to not have to cook or clean, be able to sleep whenever, and binge watch tv all day!

  • I honestly wouldn’t mind as I know that when I get back from holiday I’m always dreading what’s waiting for me back at home and work!
I’d definitely welcome am extra two weeks away from ‘real life’ even if it’s just in a hotel. I don’t have to worry about cleaning or making the bed Ahahaha

  • All I can say is that’s life. It’s only 2 weeks more and it’s to protect them and other people. Not something to really be complaining about when people are loosing their loved ones in such a quick, lonely sad way. They should just be happy to be alive . I bet hundreds of people would Love to take their places .
