Indoor activities for kids that you can do on a rainy day or when your little ones are bored from playing outside.

There are many indoor activities for kids that will keep them occupied. Finding something interesting is hard as anything can bore them in a second so being creative is the only way to go about it.

1. Puzzles

Puzzles are one of the best indoor activities for kids! They are a great way to keep them busy as they encourage them to think about how to match the pieces together. Puzzles will help in improving their short term memory and their problem-solving skills so it is a fun activity with many benefits! You can find a lot of different puzzles in the shops, made to suit the needs and interests of everyone!

2. Card games

Card games have been popular for decades and for a good reason! There are many ways to use them and different types of card games you could buy. You can teach your kids how to play rummy or go for a deck of Uno cards. Either way, the options are endless!

3. Ceramics

Ceramics are fun for all ages! It allows the kids to be creative and make whatever they can imagine. Pots, mugs, statues, it is up to them to choose their next masterpiece! The best part? While waiting for one of their creations to dry they can start making another one or start deciding on what colour they will paint it. It keeps them busy and always presents them with a new challenge! If ceramics are too messy then playdough is always a good alternative.

4. Learning a language

Learning a language is one of the most useful indoor activities for kids. They will be able to spend their time productively and learn something that they can use later in their life. Learning a new language as a kid has many advantages including higher academic achievement, better problem-solving skills and greater empathy. Not only that, but it exposes them to something new and having a second language is always an important asset. If you have an iPad at home then that is a great tool, otherwise, there are a lot of language books for kids.

5. Board games

Board games are one of the most popular indoor activities for kids. There many of them that can keep the whole family entertained from a simple one like Monopoly to a more strategic one like Jenga. If your children are older Scrabble and Jenga are amazing and really fun. If they are a bit younger then Battleship and Telestrations are great alternatives!

6. Hide and Seek

If the size of your house allows it, hide and seek is a fantastic activity. They get a lot of excitement and happiness especially when you pretend that you can’t find them. You can either switch roles or you can let them be the ones to always hide.

7. Dance Freeze

Dance Freeze is a very fun activity your kids will love! Simply, put their favourite song on and tell them to dance. Every few seconds say ‘freeze’ and those who keep dancing are the losers. This game along with Simon Says are really fun ways to spend your free time.

8. Cooking

It might sound like a really bad idea but you never know till you try it! You could get them really excited by involving them in the making of their favourite food. If they are cooking something they love then they will try their best to produce the perfect result. And who knows? They might actually appreciate the effort you put into making their foods every day. Maybe.

There are many indoor activities for kids and each one suits a different family. Creativity is the only solution when it comes to entertaining our children as their energy is way higher than ours.

  • I’ve just started cooking with my son, his only two but he loves to get involved. Loves to bake cookies put the ingredients into cups or bowls and let him put them all in to a large bowl and he will help mix the ingredients.
Then once I put them onto a tray he will decorate them before I put them into the oven.

  • I have a craft drawer especially for home days. I buy kits when they are on special and also other cheap bits and pieces when I see them. Paints, glitters, bits of material and pretty paper. We decorate plant pots, or make cards and pictures. Make little pom poms creatures, puppets or little popsicle stick people. My nearly 3 yr old daughter loves it

  • Bord games and card games are always a great option, no matter the age. I enjoy cooking too with my daughter. Even now that she is 17. Sometimes we cook the same dish at the same time, and bring our personal touch to it. Then my husband has to test it and, without knowing who made what, say which is one better. :-)

    • Aw that’s a lovely bonding activity ! And who is most often the winner, you or your daughter ?
