Baby Kelsey suffers with eczema that is so severe she gets raw blisters that regularly burst and cause unbearable pain.

The five month old baby girl from Brisbane has to have mittens taped to her tiny hands to prevent her from scratching the extremely itchy irritated skin, but raw red sores are a constant feature all over the little girl, reports The Daily Mail.

Her mother, Alexandra Dean, 25, has expressed her disappointment at discovering that Kelsey will have to wait A YEAR before she sees a skin specialist.

‘I used to stay up at night with her and just cry because I had to pin myself on her … because even with the mittens on she’d just have to rub her face,’ Ms Dean said.

She has tried everything from antibiotics, to private dermatologists and multiple doctors visits but nothing is working.

It turns out that Kelsey is one of 200 children on a 12-month waiting list at Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital to see a special dermatologist.

Alexandra took matters into her own hands and contacted a South African dermatologist who came recommended by friends.

A ‘miracle cream’ was prescribed and the results visible just overnight are STAGGERING.

‘We saw a difference overnight. Now that she’s ten days into the treatment her skin’s doing really well and she only scratches occasionally, like a normal baby would,’ Ms Dean said.

However the alternative treatment doesn’t come cheap, and with no help from Medicare she’s relying on friends and family to help offset the $200-plus it costs each month.

  • The waiting list for most people is ridiculous and for young babies like this it is even harder as the parents have to control a child who does not know any better. My oldest had a bad skin condition and was told he would have to wait for help . Try putting mittens, cotton ones on a baby in the tropics not easy as he was getting heat rash on his hands too. Luckily water helped him but this meant someone had to be with him all the time while in the water and there is only so much time you can leave a baby in water. We moved to another state and the medical help was given when the doctor there realised it was not the cold weather doing it to my son, I took a taxi that day to see the doctor. It is wrong that as parents we have to search for answers while the children suffer.

  • It’s disgusting what our health system is coming to. I can only imagine what things will be like if we lose Medicare! Living in a ‘privileged’ country with access to so many things and paying such high taxes it is so upsetting that cases like this are being swept under the rug.

  • I wonder where they live and if it could be aggravated by their water.
Relatives of ours personally know a boy who when he was a baby he had eczema all over him including his legs. They were transferred interstate with his Dad’s job and it got worse. When he was walking some days it was so sore he cried a lot more than normal. They had all sorts of tests done for allergies. His worst allergy was the Adelaide water, I kid you not. The less they needed to wash him the better. They went back to Melbourne and his rash started to improve within two weeks. Needless to say, his Dad specifically asked NOT to be transferred to Adelaide again.

  • I had heard about a miraculous cream that solved eczema problems. I don’t remember if I read about it here or it was in Today Tonight. Really sad that through Medicare this little girl should wait for a year to see a dermatologist. Why does she have to suffer so much pain if something can be done already now?
A very expensive treatment going private indeed.

  • Is it really just a skin condition? My little girl had cheeks like that when I breast fed her after eating food she was allergic to and I just didn’t know it at the time.

  • My little boy is almost 5 months and suffers awful with eczema all over and we have tried all the recommended washing powder changes etc and nothing has worked. He was seen for allergy tests and it turns out he’s allergic to milk and his skin flare ups could be connected to me eating dairy products! Iv been advised to stop eating dairy for 6 weeks to see if his skin improves and so far so good! Worth a try for your little one to see if it helps! (They said there’s a special formula for babies who are not breadfed)x

  • That’s fantastic that she found a treatment that works. Perhaps that treatment could be shown to her gp so she can get assistance from medicare
