The mother was told she was being unreasonable after expressing safety concerns about school jerseys…

A British mother has taken to Mumsnet to ask if she is being unreasonable to have concerns over the safety of her child’s school jersey. The mum said that her son is only primary school age and that having his name printed on the back of his jersey would put him at risk.

A Safeguarding Issue

The mum said she was contemplating contacting the school about the issue. “Just found out Year 6 leavers hoodies will have the full names on their hoodies in the year number with their own name above the number and the school emblem and name on the front,” she wrote. “Am I being unreasonable to think this is a safeguarding issue and should not be permitted? Am I also being unreasonable to want to take this up with the PTA who are organising this?” The mum went on to say that part of the issue was that the hoodie would be worn all week on the Year 6 school trip where her son would be out in public.

Major Overreaction

Responses to the post labelled the mum’s concern as a major overreaction. “This isn’t a safeguarding issue,” one commenter wrote. “It’s possibly a privacy issue, as anyone who cares to look will know the child’s first and last name, but it categorically isn’t safeguarding.” Another pointed out that the mum was not obliged to buy her child a jersey if she was uncomfortable with the design. “It’s a nice thing for them all to have,” she said. “Are you paying for it? Don’t get your kid one if its got you up in arms.”

With primary school graduations becoming more and more extravagant, we think that parents will only be faced with more and more decisions about what they are comfortable with.

  • The local schools here have been doing this for at least 20years that I am aware of and I have never heard of it causing any negative issues.

  • Hmmm, maybe a bit too much info. It is meant to be a memento though. My kids didn’t even get jerseys for grade 6. They both got one for finishing year ten. From memory, they had all their classmates names on them, the year and that they were leavers. I’m not sure if they even had the school name on them, I presume they did

  • Whilst I wouldn’t have an issue with this, I do know of some families that would. For those that are outraged, there are some children that do need to be protected at schools and in life from their families and extended families who do actually try to harm their kids. This is a thing. All you have to do is sit in a Principal’s office and see the mug shots on the wall. And it’s simple to say don’t buy for your child, but then you’re isolating them from the rest of the group. I do think the writing is small enough that this shouldn’t be such an issue. I do understand this Mother’s angst.

  • It would be nice for them to have but it would mean anyone would know their name and what school they went to. With paedophiles around this may be what she is worried about. Just don’t buy it if you are worried.

  • I don’t see what the issue is who cares if people can see your child’s name? Unless you are famous it’s not really going to hurt anything.

  • why do they need their full name on them, seems a bit ridiculous to me.

  • I would just refuse to buy one.

  • It’s not as though the children will be on their own – they will be with the school. I think this is more about privacy than safety.

  • No, I don’t believe you are overreacting. I would feel the same about having my child’s name in print for all to see. I believe it is a privacy issue and I would take it to the PTA and discuss the dangers of this for all the children who wear them. You are being a concerned mother and I fully appreciate where you are coming from. I would not allow my child to wear the jersey. I wish you success in taking up this issue with the school, and I hope they see reason regarding this issue you are seeking to discuss with them. Best wishes.

  • If the names are written in the number 20 they look to have a lot to choose from! If they get their name printed in big letter across the back, get a nickname. If you have concerns then there are two options 1. Don’t buy the jumper 2. Buy it and only allow you child to wear it on the school premises and have another on hand when walking to and from school, or buy it as a keepsake and again, don’t allow your child to wear it!

  • I don’t see an issue!!

  • The ones at the primary school here just have the first names. Unless there are kids with the same name, then they have the initial of the last name.

  • I wonder if the Mother & Father have separated and don’t want to know the Father to know which school their son goes to. I would be more concerned if it had only her son’s name on it.

  • I don’t see the issue here

  • My eldest two wore them with pride. I didn’t stress about it.

    • I don’t understand why this mum is so furious, she doesn’t have to buy the shirt if she doesn’t want to.
