Hello!

This new supermarket chain to land in Australia is expected to have shops five times bigger than Coles, more variety than Aldi and prices like Costco (with no membership). Tell us More!

The new chain of stores is called Kaufland. It’s well-known in central and eastern European countries like Poland and Bulgaria but this is the first time they are stepping into an English-speaking country.

So the BIG difference that sets Kaufland apart from its competitiors is space. These shops are massive – ranging up to 20,000 square metres. That’s up to 15 times bigger than an Aldi and five times bigger than a big Coles or Woolworths, as reported in the Herald Sun.

The chain also houses an extensive range – stocking up to 40,000 different items (in comparison Aldi only stocks 1,300). And just like Costco, it sells everything from ladders to kettles, TVs to Vodka.

Why Australia?

Kaufland, first opened in West Germany in the 1980s has really only expanded into former communist countries.

So it is not 100% clear why Kaufland has picked Australia as its next target of expansion. But what is apparent, is that the stores are imminent.

Jobs

There are jobs opportunities open right now on their Australian website. They are looking for property developers, administrative assistants, and architectural planners and would prefer if you spoke German.

The decision to open Kaufland in Australia comes after an extensive analysis at Schwarz Group, who own the supermarket chain. We speculate that they may feel there is room take over Australian shopping by offering a really big range.

If Kaufland is successful, this will surely put pressure on Coles, Woolworths, and even Aldi. We’ll just have to watch this space.

  • jobs creation is great but not if it comes at the cost to local businesses like Foodland and Drake. These companies support and promote south Australian products and Australian products and it would be a shame to loose the little players in the shopping world.

  • This will probably take either Coles, Woolworths, Costco or Aldi out of the equation [IGA is already struggling] which will probably mean a harder time for the brand name goods manufactured in Australia to get a look in. If Kaufland profits go back to Germany like Aldi’s does, I won’t shop there on principle. I have checked out Costco – too expensive unless in bulk which a small family cannot use and I don’t like having to pay to shop there and I don’t like their profits going back to USA either.

  • This sounds exciting. I live in a country area so I don’t expect to be going there often though.

  • If there is going to be more jobs created and more competition with prices between the supermarket chains, then I see this as a good thing

  • I’d certainly give them a try.
