The grandmother of one of the children who survived has tearfully spoken about the loss of the young girl’s mother, Kate Goodchild.

Canberra woman Kate Goodchild, her brother Luke Dorsett, his partner Roozbeh Araghi, and Sydney-based NZ woman Cindy Low were killed when their raft overturned on the Thunder River Rapids Ride on Tuesday.

A Ms Low’s 10-year-old son and Ms Goodchild’s 12-year-old daughter survived the tragedy, with police describing their escape as a “miracle”.

Gillian Turner said her son, (Ms Goodchild’s partner), witnessed the accident and had her die in his arms.

“My son managed to reach his partner of 33 years, who died in his arms while his 12-year-old daughter looked on screaming in the background,” she told 9NEWS.
Ms Turner said Ms Goodchild was a “wonderful mum”.

“I would like to believe my 12-year-old granddaughter was saved so she could tell her little sister what a wonderful mum Kate was,” she said.

Ms Turner said she was upset by the response by Dreamworld to her family in the wake of the accident.

Our deepest condolences to all involved.

  • In such circumstances the media behaviour leaves a lot to be denied.
Some pressure and harrass people to make statements. In print media they don’t always print only what is contained in an interview. It happened in the 1940s and it’s still happening.
In a murder came in SA, the media not only hung around the house where the victim lived but also neighbouring houses pestering them for interviews. One of the adjoining neighbours had visitors one day and they had to park around the corner in the next street. The media made it impossible for them to drive out of the yard safely so the friend did the shopping for them. She was pestered by the media while she was trying to get to the front door to deliver the groceries. They also attempted to interview her when she left. She went to the house next door, not the crime scene so how was she to give a reliable account of what happened. She went home, then called the Police.

  • I will never understand why the families of people caught up in such tragedy feel the need to share it with the media/public. Is it for money? I would tell them to all bugger off and leave me to grieve
