Grant Denyer speaks out about often being shamed for only having daughters and not a male heir.

The 40-year-old radio host tells Be he’s extremely proud of the female strong family he shares with wife Cheryl, but has revealed he’s regularly quizzed over the fact he doesn’t have a son — and it makes him “angry”.

“What offends me is when people go, and I’ve had this quite a few times, ‘ahh you’ve got two girls, clearly you want to go for a boy,’ like you wouldn’t be happy with two girls,” he explained.

“I adore my two girls and I don’t need anymore in my life,” he continued. “They are the loves of my life and they’re daddy’s girls. We don’t feel like there’s anything missing.”

“I had a guy come to me when Sailor was born and he goes, ‘so you had a girl first, are you a bit disappointed it wasn’t a boy, like you must want an heir?’

“But I’m not currently the head of a royal family,” Grant said. “I was so angry. We’d managed to bring a human into the world who we loved more than anything, like how can you be disappointed?”

Have you fought this battle?  I know I do as a mum of boys too. GAH!

  • Isnt it amazing how rude people can be?
My husband and I had three girls and he always said that he was glad he had girls as he didnt think he would have been a good father to a boy. Im sure he would have been but as girls were all he knew he was happy with that.

  • Good for you Grant! It’s unbelievable that this opinion is still floating around. I had a similar argument with my brother a little while ago. He has somehow managed to be in ownership of our dad’s army memorabilia. My brother has no kids of his own so I asked what his plans were for them. He said he would most likely pass them onto another brothers sons, as they will be keeping dads family name going. Even tho one son already has kids and they have the mothers surname. Even though my son followed family tradition and joined the army. Even though the two brothers don’t talk and my mum has no time for the nominated heirs. It’s all about payback for my brother…….he doesn’t like me. But his opinion of keeping the family name going is so outdated

  • It’s not like it’s something you can control so I’m not sure why people are so hung up on it. You get what you get and you should never go into parenthood wishing for only one or the other because there’s a 50% chance you won’t get what you want. That said, I’m sure some people just use the whole “oh I bet you’re hoping for a….” just as something to say. It’s just a bit annoying really.

  • I haven’t fought this battle but I’ve certainly witnessed it. Many of our male friends have daughters only. Many of them!! People are so rude and assuming. How dare anyone make these comments or any assumptions on what people want or feel or need. When it is so hard to have a child, we need to stop getting into people’s business about their families.

  • As long as they are loved and cared for who cares what gender they are. A girl can carry on the family name if she so wishes these days. I have 2 boys and I’ve never wished one of them was a girl.

  • I come from a family with 5 girls. Even my mum had this traditional way of thinking that she failed giving a son to my dad (as if she’s God, lol). However my dad was only proud of us.

  • Understand where he is coming from however I have seen the other side of the story where a mother had her 6th daughter and was still trying for a boy so his family name could live on.

  • They could have 10 more children and they might still end up with all girls. You don’t get to choose what you get even if you do want to. Good on Grant for loving his girls so much.

  • Just so terrible that some people still have this outdated point of view. A happy and healthy child regardless of gender is all that any family could hope for in their family. An heir is of any gender – even the royal family have changed the laws around all genders being heirs to the throne. I have always shut people down if they mention gender – it is rude and demonstrates bad manners. Blessed to have our children.

    • Some people worrying about the family name not living on…..many women keep their maiden name or decide to not have children. It just saddens me that people worry about gender.

  • Incredible that there are still people saying such things. Boys, girls.. what’s the difference?

  • Mg hubby and I get this too. We just welcomed our 5th child and also 5th daughter and get asked the same question all the time. What annoys me most is this has now rubbed off onto our daughters. One of them thinks she can’t be a boilermaker like her dad because shes a girl….. my answer was “You can do anything a boy can, just not pee standing up”.
