A set of greeting cards went viral over the weekend, with Twitter pointing out that they were nothing but sexist.

“You’re the kind of girl I’d buy flowers for,” read one card, with the other stating: “You’re the kind of boy I’d make a sandwich for.”

U.K.-based actor, writer and singer Natasha Hodgson tweeted a photo of the cards side by side and called them ‘the two sides of heterosexuality’.

People were soon quick to jump in with their own comparisons.

Many asked what year it is, and pointed out that lots of people enjoy both flowers and sandwiches — regardless of their gender.

Do you think they are sexist?

  • Agreed with post below me, should’ve used person. Or a pet name that people use for both genders like baby, babe, honey, darling, hottie etc.

  • Looks like they should have used person instead of boy/girl!

  • People look too much into trying to find a negative. If you don’t like the card don’t buy it.
Does life really have to come down to labelling a female or male as person ?

  • Happily take the flowers and the sandwich! ;)

  • Oh yep that’s true, why can’t a boy make you a sandwich?

  • Why can’t we just have light humour instead of taking the fun out of eerything these days. It’s not a big deal and i find it kind of cute

  • Don’t people just love to get their knickers in a knot over the stupidest things now days! Geez, get over it

  • They are funny! Come one, don’t be so sensitive!

  • No not sexist at all. People will find anything to be outraged about these days

  • No they are definitely not sexist!

  • They aren’t sexist. Just coz it’s written in a card doesn’t mean it’ll happen! They are terms of endearment! I’m not gonna make just anybody a sandwich! So if I gave this card to my husband he will know just how special he is!
Also their argument is about heterosexuality… I’m sure homosexual couples could buy them for their partners too!

  • They’re just greeting cards. You never can please everyone, someone will always complain and whinge.

  • Nah, don’t think they’re too sexist. I’m a girl and love to get flowers and wouldn’t be offended by a card like that. I’ve never bought flowers for my husband, but I did make him sandwiches and also for my kids (boys & girls).
My boy loved to dress in girls clothes and pink princess dresses with necklaces and earrings, so did my girls. My girls like to play with cars, so did my boy. My boy got dolls for his birthday, so did my girls. My girls love balls, just as much as my boy does. It’s all fine with me.

  • I can see that the intent was probably less sexist… But it doesn’t come over well.

  • I think your interpretation is the thing that makes a label
