Grey’s Anatomy stars heartbreak as she reveals why she was left unable to have children.

Kate Walsh, 48, who plays Dr. Addison Montgomery on the show Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice, revealed in an interview on the Conversations with Maria Menounos show.

‘I don’t have children. I’m not going to have kids. I went through early menopause. That happened,’ she said.

‘It was bleak. But that was a great kind of experience and growth,’ she said.

‘I’ve always felt I’ve been, at times in my life, indecisive or have hard times making decisions. I go for what I want and I also embrace what’s in front of me.’

‘It could be a product of our environment. The Pill, we don’t know,’ she said.

Kate said she didn’t think it was possible to have the ideal career and the ideal family.

‘I don’t know if you can actually have it all,’ she said. ‘I think that is actually this American myth. I wouldn’t call it a dream. I think it’s a bit of a myth in that it’s this huge pressure.’

She added: ‘We’re like, “Wait a minute, am I less than if I’m not a mother? If I’m not a rock star in my career?” I don’t know. I’m just rambling. This is what I ponder.’

  • I think many people find their choices limited by medical issues. Sympathy.

  • One of our best friends couldn’t have kids for about 10 years and had given up in the idea of kids but they decided to adopt instead. Although it was a long drawn out process, it’s really worth seeing them together and happy.

  • I don’t know whether you can know how she feels unless you are in or have been in the same situation as her. It’s easy to say that life can still be fulfilling etc without children and I guess in ways it can but for me personally, I wouldn’t feel whole without my daughter. I think its a shame that some women who would give anything to have a child, cannot. I really feel for them x

  • She could still adopt or foster a child if she really wants to be a parent. From her interview it sounds to me like she’s still not really sure what she wants.

  • That is sad. She also had trouble conceiving in private practice

  • Women can try and have it all and be mums, have careers and whatever else they want. We need to explode those myths and give having it all a good go! :)
I do feel for anyone that has been unable to have children and wanted to have children. There are others way to be a mum and children that desperately need parents. Fostering and adopting are options too.

    • That is exactly what I was thinking. Adoption or Fostering brings hope and love to many.

      • Glad you agree – so many children need love and care and homes.

  • I love Greys Anatomy, I record it every week. Used to be the same for Private Practice, where did that go? It just disappeared

  • Early menopause is a reality for many people – we need to talk about it as it can be hereditary and most mothers/sisters font inform their daughters/sisters. Its very confronting for those who experience it and have to deal with the physical aspects of menopause at a young age. Good to see it being discussed.

  • I know women that couldn’t become mothers because of infertility problems. And it was very hard on them because that was their dream.
An early menopause can change so much indeed. One friend of mine went into menopause at 40 years old. Luckily she never thought about having kids.
I think it’s very difficult to accept something whereupon you don’t have any power.
