Hello!

We all love chocolate, but it is possible to have too much of a good thing, especially around Easter time.

Here are just  a few healthy Easter gift ideas to help balance out the bounty of chocolate eggs:

  • A disposable electric tooth brush.

These are standard in our Easter baskets each year. The kids enjoy the novelty of an electric toothbrush and I am able to relax a little more knowing that even though they have eaten way too much chocolate, at least their teeth will be extra clean.

  • Winter PJ’s

I’m not exactly sure why the Easter Bunny opts for PJ’s over clothes, but this alternative gift is almost as traditional as Easter eggs in many households.

  • New lunchbox containers

These are pretty frequent in our Easter baskets too. I like to opt for insulated containers so I can send ‘hot’ lunches to school over the cooler months.

  • Easter craft

Who doesn’t love to decorate eggs at Easter? There are heaps of cute little craft packs available or if you’re feeling really creative you could blow and dye some real eggs.

  • Easter stories

If there is one thing I think a child can never have too many of, its book. There are so many beautiful stories around and reading is such a great way to spend time together. Remember, if children have out grown a book they are prefect to ‘hammy down’ to friends or family too.

  • Egg cups

Eggs are a nutritious, whole food great for growing kids. Something as simple as a cute egg cup can be all some children need to encourage them to enjoy different foods. Egg cups also make great pots for dips and sauce, which are also a good way to encourage children to eat different foods like vegetables.

  • Easter balloons

Especially for younger children who might not be old enough to really get involved in an Easter egg hunt or to eat chocolate, bright colourful balloons can be a fantastic option. Easter specific designs are available too.

  • Seasonal seeds or seedlings

We nutritionists love to harp on about getting children involved with growing food, but at Easter it has all the more sentiment in the spirit of new life, new beginnings and life cycles. So many lessons to be learnt in the garden and the turn of the season is a great time to get planting.

  • Hot chocolate gift pack (especially good if you plan to camp over the eater holidays)

Simply mix together a 1 tablespoons of pure cocoa, 2-3 tablespoons of milk powder, 1-2 teaspoon sugar (optional), and a few mini marshmallows on the side (optional). You can either mix the ingredients together, with the marshmallows on the side, and package in a cellophane gift bag with a ribbon or layer the ingredients in a small glass jar. Add a small gift tag that includes the instruction to prepare hot chocolate, add hot water.

  • Plastic eggs

These are great because they can be filled with anything your child likes. You might get away with dried fruit for littlies, stickers, a gold coin, those cute fluffy little chicken toys or any other trinkets.

These eggs are also good to reduce the amount of chocolate your child gets or control their portion size by just filling each egg with a few smarties. (Using these plastic eggs is also a good tip if you’re planning an egg hunt outside and are worried about the family pooch helping themselves – chocolate is a big No No for dogs).

The Kids Menu wishes you all a happy, healthy Easter!
