Hello!

Social media can be marvellous in times of crisis, for those needing help as well as heroes ready to provide it, giving them the means to be able to find one another.

Facebook set up a Crisis Response in relation to the terror attacks in Sri Lanka recently. It enabled users to see who on their list of friends had been “marked as safe” which gave peace of mind, but it also allowed people the opportunity to ask for help in terms of resources

There was a list which included things like food, water, shelter, clothing, toiletries, baby supplies, etc, but there was something which the social media giant hadn’t added to the options for people to select from.

Instant Chills

I stopped scrolling the moment I read a mother’s post pleading for “o+ blood” for her child.

It sent chills down my body- I really can’t imagine what she must have been feeling and the helplessness of it all. At a time of great crisis, a country’s blood supply is something which runs low incredibly fast.

We all want to make the world a better place, we all want to contribute to a better future for the next generation, but as we can’t always help people going through major crisis in other countries through financial means, why not pay tribute to them by rolling up our sleeves right here and donating blood regularly.

We may not be going through a crisis at the moment, nor do we anticipate one, but we should donate more because, even if we are not in a financial position to help others, we might still be an excellent candidate to donate blood regularly and make a difference to a family’s life.

It’s an act of kindness which you will never hear the gratitude from, but it’s one you know in your heart the recipient will deeply appreciate you for

  • Yes I donate, I started when I was 18 and did it regularly until I was about 22. Then did it again down the track, stopped and started again about 5 years ago. I also donate plasma sometimes and are on the bone marrow register. It’s a pretty hard thing to be eligible for but it’s a good feeling doing it.

  • I used to be a regular blood donor but after an illness brought on by being prescribed incorrect medication my blood is no longer of help to anyone but me. I’d be quite happy to donate if I could. I actually only know 2 people out of all my family and friends that do this at all. I used to get odd looks and strange reactions when I went off to donate. :(
