Big cosmetic companies constantly try to convince us that you can’t put a price on beauty and youth should be achieved whatever the cost.

However, that often means billions of dollars spent on products tested on animals or full of parabens and other carcinogenic ingredients.

I don’t want this on my face!

October was National Buy Nothing New Month, and when I researched for new ways to make things myself, I found a few delicious beauty recipes made entirely of products I found in my fridge and cupboards.

Tried and tested, here are the beauty products I use right now and I’ve been using them for a month now!

Face Care

Make your own face mask using nothing but honey, yogurt and fresh fruits or some veggies.

Mask #1

Take two teaspoons of honey and apply on your face.

Wait 10-20 minutes and wash. Your skin will become silky soft and clean.

Mask #2

Yogurt and strawberries.  With a fork mash one or two strawberries in a bowl, add two tablespoons of Greek yogurt and apply on your face.

Hair Care

Make your own mask using eggs and olive oil.

Whisk two eggs in a bowl and add two tablespoons of olive oil. Mix and apply on your hair.

Leave on for 30 minutes and step inside the shower.

Note: Brush your hair well before applying the mask, spread it well and thoroughly wash with shampoo and conditioner.

More products that can help you make your cosmetics from scratch are:

  • Olive Oil – this divine substance is not only the best thing you can cook with, but the most amazing thing is you can use it in your beauty procedures too.
  • Vaseline Petroleum jelly could be used on rough skin, elbows and knees, lips and cracked heels. Vaseline is often used to define lashes and tame brows.
  • Lemon Clarifying moisturiser – mix a few drops of coconut water with a few drops of lemon juice. The coconut will hydrate your skin, and lemon will clear and brighten it.
  • Lemon – If your elbows and knees appear dark, simply rub them with half a lemon. Lemon has anti-bacterial qualities and is often used in cleaning, so you could use it on blackheads and blemishes, or to make cleansing wipes. Simply add pure lemon juice with distilled water and tea tree oil. Perfect for oily and problematic skin.

Purchasing things is like giving your vote. The things we spend the most money on will thrive. Let us make conscious choices and invest in natural, green, animal-friendly choices.

  • One of my daughters and I spent the day making various face masks and such from items in the pantry. It was a wonderful girls day.

  • Fantastic…. I love the home hacks such as this as they are cost effective and simple to produce but more Importantly I am impowered by the fact that I made it myself. It is also a great idea for gifts as it is a bit more personal when you make it yourself

  • Oh these sound fun! I think my 3 year old and myself would have some good mother-daughter bonding time making these

  • Home made beauty products can be quite economical especially when everything needed is already in the pantry. And, of course, they are usually made from natural products which is even better. I’ve used honey, oats and yoghurt, avacado, and even potato.
