Using leftover supplies and materials from special occasions in the past to make Christmas costumes for the family is a great way to keep in the holiday spirit.

Below are a few of the most popular outfits worn during festivities:

1) Santa Claus

Creating the perfect St. Nick outfit is easy as going through the old clothes in storage.

Start out with an oversized red shirt, short robe, or blouse and add the following: a black belt with a large buckle, red trousers or sweatpants, white faux fur (from that old winter coat or from the fabric store), a Santa hat, and black boots. First, cut the faux fur into long strips and glue or stitch to the hems and cuffs of the top, down the front, and the hem of the pants. Second, insert a pillow or cushion (for Santa’s tummy), and attach the belt, wig, and white beard. Finish off the outfit with boots and hat.

2) Christmas tree

This clever outfit allows for people to use the old tree ornaments in decorating. First, a green or black form-fitting outfit is needed (minidress, a leotard, etc.) as the trunk of the tree. Second, take a large piece of green felt or other thick material and cut in half. Draw a Christmas tree design on each piece and cut out. Next, take two large pieces of cardboard and cut into the shape of a tree for the fabric pieces to be glued onto. Then, apply the ornaments and tinsel to the tree pieces. Put a set of holes in the top sides of each tree piece and attach strong cord or ribbon, creating a sandwich board. Finally, pull the tree over the outfit for easy wear.

3) Rudolph, The Red-Nosed Reindeer

Remember the birthday party for that special little person? There should be some leftover face paint and maybe a red clown nose in with the supplies. A brown sweat suit or long-sleeved leotard with matching tights, black slippers, black mittens, and hand-decorated deer antlers are the only items needed for this cute outfit.

4) Christmas Angel

One of the most elegant costumes to make, this outfit requires a white dress or gown, white faux fur, satin ribbon, three wire hangers, and a headband. First, unwind all of the wire hangers with a set of pliers and shape them into one small circle (with a tail) and two wing shapes. Next, attach white faux fur to the new pieces. Second, wrap ribbon around the headband, attach the tail of the wire circle by twisting, and wrap more satin around the base of the halo and the headband. Third, twist the ends of each of the wings together and attach a long piece of satin ribbon for tying to the outfit.

5) Three Wise Men (Magi)

Another very simple outfit perfect for the Nativity scenes where only a few items are needed include a robe (red, purple, royal blue, or gold), small bath or hand towel (for the headdress) gold sash (ribbon or curtain rope), and a crown. The robe and crown may be decorated with jewels, rhinestones, and glitter.

  • These sound very do-able. Don’t forget shepherds can be made with a dads striped pj top, some rope and an interesting stick from the garden.
