Hello!

I’m the first to admit that when a new smartphone gets released, I’m tempted by the additional features.

The thing is, most of us can’t justify purchasing a new smartphone, or you might be stuck in a two year contract.

Well, eBay says there’s now $6.4 billion reasons to consider selling your old phone, and then using the money towards purchasing your next phone. eBay data estimated that there are $6.4 billion worth of second hand handsets sitting in drawers across Australia, with models selling for an average $286.

You can find how much your smartphone is worth by visiting here. It grabs information from eBay based on past sales, and gives you a trending price.

I used this site to get a trending sale price for my Samsung Note 4:

SAMSUNG NOTE 4, GOLD

Recommended Retail Price: $1,099

Purchased in: September, 2015 – So I’ve been using this phone for roughly 7 months

Condition: Excellent, not one scratch on it

According to eBay, their top five best selling mobile handsets are:

  1. Apple iPhone 5 and 5S
  2. Apple iPhone 6 and 6 Plus
  3. Samsung Galaxy S6
  4. Apple iPhone 4S
  5. Samsung Galaxy S5

So, if you’ve got a spare phone or two lying around, try and sell it on eBay!

Have you ever sold a smartphone on eBay? Do you have any tips to add?

  • How handy, though it’s sad how much value comes off the second you take it out of the box :(

  • you can sell even old ones to a company and they will pay you for them

  • I’ve never sold a phone on eBay or bought one and would be nervous to do so. I have an iPhone 4S and figure I’ll use it until it nearly dies before progressing to a newer version. I imagine it won’t be worth anything, or can pass on to a teen for their first phone.

  • Just a thought, if the phones are sooooo good, and worth **money**, why are people replacing them? My phone is 14 yrs old and still works, and I have saved thousands of dollars not keeping up with the Jones’s.

Or am I just out of touch with what is considered truly important in today’s modern lifestyle where without a mini electronics store in my own home causing a loss of writing and interpersonal verbal communications is the norm?

What is this TXT thingy again?

  • As long I have a phone what works I don’t mind what I have so I don’t need a smart phone :) and no, I never sold or bought a smart phone on ebay….

  • I\’m not surprised that iPhone 5 is the top option because a phone technician told me its the most reliable handset on the market. Great to know I can get a return in my investment but I\’ve had my phone for 4 years and love it. Won\’t be trading this bad boy in, or will I :c)

  • I never have! But that’s because I only upgrade when I (or the kids) smash my old one :/

  • No, I haven’t sold one on eBay. I do need a new one, very shortly, so I may just head over to eBay and see if I can find a bargain

  • Unfortunately mine get scratched and smashed to pieces by the time I (and little fingers) get through with them.

  • I buy my phones by Telstra and wouldn’t go second hand with the prices now!

  • ebgames also buy some phones and they wipe them too so all the info is taken off before re sale.

    • I know somebody who sold a phone to EB Games only last week. She knew how to erase all details in it and re-set it to factory settings. Seh was surprised how much she got for it. She got more value by buying computer other electronic games than if they paid her cash. The difference she purchased a gift card.

  • I’m not sure. But it’s such an important point. Depending on what you have stored there, it could be not only uncomfortable but also dangerous to have your data still stored in there. Try reading this article: https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT201351 I hope it helps!
