Aussie mums are turning to Kmart to buy all their party needs, with some even going on to earn their money back.

Queensland mother Melinda Paine told Daily Mail how the idea came to fruition after her sons first birthday.

‘A few days after I shared party pics online I was contacted by a few mums wanting to either hire or buy some of the things I used,’ she said.

‘It goes to show the current trend of  “Kmart hacks” can really present a basic product in an extraordinary light.

‘I am quite sentimental so many of the pieces will be kept and integrated into our home.’

She does rent out some of the items for a small fee.

‘It’s a great chance to save them some money on products they may not use again or that are sold out,’ she said.

‘Kmart’s range has given me space to be creative without completely busting the bank,’ she said. ‘My organisation paid off and everything went to plan. The birthday boy was full of smiles which is the most important thing.’

Samantha McGilvey, 44, a Brisbane mother of two, previously spoke to FEMAIL about the slumber party she created for her 12-year-old daughter.

She was originally told by a party hire company that what she was after would set her back AUD $500, not including food or a birthday cake.

The savvy mother was able to do it all herself and spent $450, which included a gift bag, food and a homemade cake.

‘I decided we could do it ourselves and I set it up in such a way that I could sell it on,’ she said. ‘I planned to sell before I even started — I don’t like spending excessive money on a one-off event and I didn’t want to store everything,’ she continued.

‘I advertised on a Facebook buy and sell group and the kit was gone within 10 hours, only 48 hours after the party,’ Samantha said. After finding a buyer online that was willing to pay $300, Samantha ended up only spending $150 for the whole party.

Another Queensland mum, Candice Stone, 34, threw her daughter a pamper party for her birthday. ‘I decided to use mostly Kmart products because they have a huge range of items that fit the theme of the party and their prices are amazing,’ she told FEMAIL.

Candice said, ‘I have friends that are borrowing the products for their children’s parties and I will most likely use everything again for the next party I plan.’

  • Good idea! This yr my girl’s 6th bday should cost around $100-200 (for her and 14 friends) and my boy’s 4th bday next yr will only cost the price of food as everything will be reused from his sister’s party and toys we already have around the house!

  • It’s amazing how creative people can be with cheap Kmart products. Kmart have so many great things, at great prices.

  • As children my siblings and I only had family birthday parties – no childrens’ parties. The craze of giving children who attend the childrens’ parties lolly or snack bags to take home takes things too far in m opinion.

  • I used slot of things from Kmart for my sons first birthday. They were cheap but looked so effective! I didn’t onsell though I just gave it away

  • Great to reuse party stuff. I’ve ended up buying a heap of decorations, furniture, cookware and more for all the family celebrations over the years and happily share them around with family, friends and neighbours for all kinds of celebrations! Definitely getting my money’s worth ????

  • I think that what these parents managed to do is impressive. Reusing party stuff is fantastic. It gets cheaper this way, it’s great for the environment and it leaves us all with a great feeling!!

  • Kids always love a nice party, but really in my experience it doesn’t have to be extravagant for it to be loved by the kids ! I think simple is good, the less work and money I spend- the better.

  • I can’t do this stuff well, but I admire the “sell it on” approach so it gets well used.

  • This shows some great common sense in “re-using” products that are often one-off items for specific themed parties!! So much effort had gone into some of these examples and it would be a shame to waste it all. Glad there was someone to ‘buy on’ the products who wanted the same party theme. But think it could be hard sustaining something like this (I for one would rather have ‘smaller’ celebrations!)

  • We tend to just do family bbqs for birthdays. A few balloons and a cake and everyone brings the meat they want. Its crazy to go nuts over it.
