One Mum’s determination to live a healthier life!

Karlye Thurlow, 36, from Lismore in NSW was a size 22 after her second child was born and weighed 120 kilograms.

She drank four litres of coke a day and binged on lollies and told Daily Mail Australia she was unhappy and tired all the time.

‘I was cooking food for my son when he was a few months old and it hit me,’ she said.

‘I just felt hypocritical nurturing my family and teaching them to eat properly without leading by example.’

She dropped the weight in just nine months and refused to put it back on.

‘I lost the first 20 kilograms by myself by changing my diet and walking for an hour every day.

‘I was too scared to go to the gym because people had been really cruel towards me because of how much weight I was carrying,’ she said.

But within three months she was ready to head to the gym. She got a personal trainer and in six months she had lost another 40 kilograms.

‘It wasn’t until after I started losing weight that I looked back at photos of myself and realised how much extra weight I had been carrying.

‘I never looked at myself in the mirror and thought about it being disgusting.

‘I guess I was reserved to feeling like that was my life and I wouldn’t be strong enough to change it.’

Ms Thurlow said losing the weight made her realise the emotional stresses which had triggered her to gain the weight in the first time.

‘My mother was in an abusive relationship – it was hard looking at her and seeing someone I looked up to being treated like that.

‘I stopped putting myself first and started doing everything for everyone.
‘I have now learnt to put myself first. I make sure I get my exercise in, I hang around like minded people and I teach my children about healthy food.’

  • That is so amazing. she does not look like HER!!! I just need to lose about 5kgs to be in the healthy range (and especially as I am short) but I power walked every day and gave up carbs for 4 weeks. i never lost a thing. So, i lost faith and went back to bad habits and eating what I shouldn’t and stopped walking. I have just been told by my doctor to keep a diary of everthing I eat for a couple of weeks to see whats going on :/

  • She looks amazing. I remember one of the biggest loser winners saying he had a lot of excess skin after losing weight and was going to use some of the winnings for surgery – I wonder if she had anything done? Not trying to put a dampener on it but her boobs look fabulous!

  • This is inspirational. It’s amazing what determination can do. Healthy living and exercise – that’s what it’s all about.

  • Healthy eating and exercise is the way to go….4 litres of coke and lollies every day would have eventually killed her.
Wishing her all the very best for the future.

  • Very inspiring – if you can stop the weight creeping up on you, it’s half the battle. But being so determined is also the other half.
