We are who we are because of the five people we spend most of our time with. We are the average of these five people, and they directly influence who we are and what we do. Whether they are family, friends or work colleagues, they are our greatest influences.

When we take note of these people and their personalities and traits, we can start to see if they are a positive or negative influence on us. But more importantly we start to realise how important those five people can be in shaping our future.

Here are some points you should think about to ensure you are surrounded by the right people for who you want to be, and what you want to achieve:

Are these five people having a positive influence on you?

The people we spend most of our time with will influence our mindset, our eating habits, our health, our attitude and even how happy we are. Ever find yourself beaming with happiness after spending time with certain friends, whilst others can leave you feeling completely flat. Those closest to us should have a positive impact on our lives, and you should have the same influence on theirs.

Do they bring out the best in you?

Are you proud of the person you are when you spend time with friends? Do you find yourself not particularly liking some of the things you do? Do they bring out the best in you? Do you bring out the best in them? You want to be spending your time with people who are going to support you to truly shine, and be the most authentic version of you.

Do they have the same goals and aspirations as you?

To achieve your goals in life you need to be surrounded by people who have similar thoughts and ideals. You need people that will support, encourage and believe in you. If you surround yourself with people who continually say, this can’t be done, or that’s too hard, how do you think this will affect your mindset? And do you think you will achieve those goals?

Are there people you could spend more time with?

Are there people who hold the same beliefs as you and are on the same path as you? Is it worth making a change so that you could be spending more time with them? Ultimately we want the people around us to support us to grow and we want to do the same for them.

As you start to notice the impact of those around you, you may begin to notice that some people are not a positive influence on your life. The good thing is that you have the power to control how much they influence you. You choose whom you want to spend your time with, thus truly influencing who you are today and who you want to be in the future!

  • I’m thankful for beautiful people in my life. There are less positive relationships too from which I learn as well. I’m trying to practice what I preach to my kids ” to be kind to people who’re unkind, they need our kindness the most”…

  • This is very true, and why I prefer to talk to wonderful people from across the world on the internet than have negative people in person. It’s amazing how your environment has such an important impact on your mind and body.

  • The five closest people to me accept me for who I am and that’s why I love them. I’ve pretty much removed all negative people from my life and have absolutely no regrets. Life really is too short to put up with negative/demanding people.
