Things really heat up during the summer months and we’re not just talking about the weather!

Your social calendar includes loads of BBQs, vacations, weekends by the pool or at the beach and so many summertime adventures.

But we’re so busy planning all our outdoor activities that we sometimes forget about how important it is to take care of our skin during the warmer weather.

Here are some tips on how to care for your skin during the warmer months:

1) Stay hydrated

Not only will drinking plenty of water keep you hydrated when the weather outside gets hotter, but it also benefits your skin. When you’re hydrated, toxins are flushed from your body. But when they build up, they can have a direct impact on your skin. Drink at least eight glasses of water each day.

2) Use sunscreen

The most important tip for amazing skin is to always wear sunscreen – even on cloudy days. The sun’s rays are powerful and can harm your skin when there isn’t any sun. To protect your skin no matter what, wear sunscreen or buy products that include SPF in them. Always go with an SPF of at least 30. If you do get sunburnt on your face, cool the burn with some aloe vera gel. You can even mix that with honey and apply it on your face for a much fresher look.

3) Wear sunglasses

Prolonged UV exposure can redden the whites of eyes, just as the sun can burn skin. Over time, this can cause eye problems, such as cataracts and macular degeneration. To prevent eye damage, wear sunglasses when you’re out and about.

4) Exfoliate weekly

When dead cells are left on the surface of your skin, your skin will start to look dry, dull and rough, which is why it’s recommended that you exfoliate at least once a week. By doing so, you’ll wash away any dead skin cells and leave behind healthy, radiant skin.

5) After-sun care

After you’ve spent the day lathered in sunscreen products to enjoy the sunshine you need to rehydrate your sun-dried skin to prevent sun damage. Wash off the residue of the sunscreen and slather on a hydrating and nourishing moisturiser.

6) Perfume

Avoid spraying perfume on your skin in the sun. Some of the ingredients in perfume can permanently stain your skin when they react with the sun. During the summertime, it is recommended that you spray your clothes with your fragrance rather than your skin.

But whatever you do, stay sun smart, have a great time and don’t leave your cosmetics and skincare products including sunscreen in a hot car or in the sun as they can spoil very quickly.

  • Yay, I follow most of these tips except the after sun care. If it counts, I have a skin care routine each night, I just don’t do anything specifically after I’ve been out in the sun.
