Hello!

As time to welcome a new family member approaches, there are a lot of things to be done.

Your schedule is undoubtedly packed, but decorating the nursery is definitely a very important step in preparation for parenthood. It will also take you some time to complete, so make sure to tackle this project as soon as possible. You can wait for gender confirmation in order to know which decorating direction to take. On the other hand, if you want this to be a surprise for everyone, you should start thinking about your nursery prep as soon as you are three to four months into pregnancy.

Covering the basics

The first thing you need to address is the overall look of the entire room. This involves a thorough clean up, as well as getting rid of everything that doesn’t belong in a nursery. A fresh coat of paint is a must.

Depending on the child’s gender, you can choose different colour schemes. In general, colours like blue, orange and green are perfect for boys, while pink, red and purple make for some lovely options in a girl’s nursery. Of course, if you’re not sure about the gender, or don’t care for gendered colouring, you can always opt for a lovely shade of yellow. What’s more, any pastel shade would look great in a baby’s room regardless of their gender.

Spruce up the walls

Painting should be one of first steps so that the toxic fumes can evaporate in time, leaving fresh and clean surface. But, there is so much more that you could do with wall décor. If you have really crafty hands, you can use more paint in order to create some beautiful pictures that your kid would love.

On the other hand, you can always get self-adhesive wall stickers depicting something fun, as well as interesting wall clocks that would make your baby. Don’t forget to add a couple of simple shelves, too, so that these can hold some nice details to warm up the entire room and create a true kid vibe.

Stay functional

The functional layout of the room is one of the essential aspects of well-equipped and decorated nursery. As a new parent, you will have to spend a lot of time in there with your child, which means that freedom and ease of movement will be very important.

Of course, you need to assess the best proximity of different furniture pieces, as well as your storage solutions. It would be great if you could avoid placing the crib right next to the wall. That way your baby will feel better and happier compared to having a cold wall at one side all the time.

Long-term investment

You will have to spend money on some baby-related stuff, such as the crib and changing table, but if you want to prep this room in a way that your child can use it later as they grow up, start with storage options.

Basically, get a wardrobe that would match both the nursery and child’s room perfectly. You can decorate it with removable stickers as well. What’s more, a toy box will always come in handy. Learning carpets can be great fun for kids up to preschool age, too.

Make it comfy for both of you

Comfort is, hands down, something that you need to consider when putting up and decorating the nursery. It’s not only about the quality of the crib in this case. You will spend plenty of time in here, taking care of your child and feeding them. Because of the specific positions for proper feeding, you should also look for appropriate and comfortable furniture that would support both you and your child the best.

Pregnancy is a very happy, yet also very stressful time. Therefore, try to find joy in completing different steps in nursery décor so that you perceive it as something fun and relaxing. Remember, it shouldn’t be a chore but a blessing.

  • The planning started early and we added a little something to the nursery every week. Having a well stocked nursery is important and having everything within arms reach for the adults too. I love decals for walls as they can instantly change the look of a room. They can be sourced at such a good price online. My tip is to make and stick to a budget for a nursery as there are so many other costs as bub grows. A nursery can be made beautiful on a small budget.

    • It is definitely important to stay on the budget and leave as much money as you can to spend it on your baby.

  • When painting your baby’s room despite what some people say, it is the baby’s bedroom to sleep in – not to be over-stimulated, try to stay awake and become over -tired. Why would you use red or purple in a girl’s room or bright orange in a boy’s room? You need paler soft colours. Ask a few Paediatricians who deal with babies who just don’t want to sleep, not because they are suffering any discomfort – they’re not crying – just want to look around the whole time between feeds. You don’t really need a crib or bassinet unless you need to move it from room to room. Properly positioned, a baby can go straight into a cot. Besides the cot one piece of furniturei s definitely one with plenty of drawers for baby’s clothes and other needs. It may be wise to anchor it to a wall so a toddler cannot try to do something like climb into a low drawer and tip it over on themselves. There has been some tragedies result from that. A friend of mine has an unusual change table in that the top can be used as a change table, and later the table part of it folds upwards to store baby and toddler needs. The bottom portion is one shelf then drawers. A reasonable height well above the tray a narrow strip at the back ise usefull as a shelf to put nappies, wipes, creams and other small items at the ready. A very comfortable chair is a perfect idea. You may wish to use it for feeding and /or sitting there while settling your baby / toddler.
