Choosing the ultimate bunch of flowers for her goes beyond her favourite colour. Sure, it influences your choice of bouquet to a degree, but if you dare to be a little different, you need to think outside the box. Exactly like how each month has a corresponding star sign, months come with their own specialised flower to match. And on top of that, each month falls into a season which brings out specific blooms for that time.

Throw in her favourite colour, her character traits and what you know she loves (or doesn’t!) then it’s certainly possible to find the perfect flower bouquet. And you can be rest assured it’s going to be something unique with a twist of flavour.

Here’s what blooms you should be looking at for each particular month:

January: Carnations

Renowned for withstanding hot conditions (great for the Australian heat!), carnations are hardy but delicately beautiful. Like roses they come in a variety of colours so they’re sure to bring a smile to any special girl in your life and each shade has its own unique meaning. As a general rule though, these pretty blooms stand for love, fascination and distinction. Carnations are the birthday flower for January and have also been the official flower for Mother’s Day since 1914.

February: Freesias

Although the official flower for February is the iris; which symbolises faith, hope and wisdom, freesias look their best for this month. Loaded with colour and a profuse citrus scent, these funnel-shaped blooms come in so many different colours. Think bright whites, purples, reds, pinks, oranges and yellows. Because they symbolise trust, thoughtfulness and friendship, they’re ideal for almost any celebration. These blooms are also fantastic (and very popular) for weddings around this time. Other blooms to consider for the month of February include the exotic zinnias or water lilies.

March: Magnolias

Magnolias’ time to shine is in the month of March. Associated with helping health problems, like lung issues and relaxing muscles, these stunning blooms come in over 200 species. Crowned one of the most feminine of flowers, they represent purity, dignity and nobility. Magnolias come in white, yellow, pink and purple and are often seen in bridal bouquets. If you’re after the specific flower for March, the bright happiness of daffodils is the way to go.

April: Daisies

The flower for April is a daisy and are bound to brighten up anyone’s day. Symbolising purity, childhood and innocence, these blooms are a big ticket love flower – but avoid giving them to anyone with ragweed allergies. Other flowers that are in season for the month of April include the siam tulip which come in pretty shades of pink, white and lime green or dahlias in yellow, purple, white and pink.

May: Lily of The Valley

If you’re after something sweet and elegant then May’s flower lily of the valley is an impressive bloom. Also known as the wedding flower (best to order in advance if you want these because they are popular), these delicate lilies signify a return of happiness. The great thing about these blooms is they don’t look like regular lilies, instead they have large oblong leaves with bell-shaped flowers (usually in bright white). They’re one of the most exquisite of the lot and a perfect for giving to the love of your life.

June: Roses

Roses have always been a great pick for flowers because of their versatile range of colours and meanings. In season all year round, they are the official bloom for June. If you’re giving to a female friend, opt for hot pink or yellow roses. For a loved one, red should be your go-to colour. Other fantastic flowers to consider for birthdays in June include forget-me-nots in bright blue, pink camellias which are known as the ‘queen of winter flowers’, or purple violets.

July: Delphiniums

Brighten up those cold winter days with some colourful delphiniums. Ranging in vivid purples, blues and whites, these stunning blooms symbolise fun and light heartedness; ideal for that bubbly friend, lover or family member of yours. Cymbidium orchids are also popular for July, as are wattle and tulips.

August: Sweet Peas

Whilst the official flower for August are gladiolis, sweet peas make for a fantastic gift with their ruffled paper-like petals. Oozing a delicate perfume to the flowers, you can find them in candy store colours or opt for white for a timeless classic appeal. If you want to go with the official bloom for August though, gladiolis come in spectacular reds, oranges, greens, purples, whites and yellows – almost all the colours of the rainbow!

September: Tulips

A personal favourite, tulips are one of the world’s most recognisable flowers. Complete with glossy petals that resemble a cup-like shape, there’s a type of tulip to suit every taste and occasion. For something a little different, opt for the French tulip as their petals are frilled with feathered edges. For the official flower of the month, asters are also a popular choice with their similar appearance to daisies and representation of love, faith and wisdom.

October: Poppies

The rich red of poppies make for a popular flower choice for anyone that loves something more intense. A little vintage and ever-so fresh, these blooms can also be found in vibrant yellows, oranges and watermelon. Symbolising fantastic extravagance and power, poppies are commonly used for Remembrance Day. Alternatively, you can choose October’s offical flower; Marigolds come in a brilliant orange shade and suit personality traits of those who are warm, devoted and fierce.

November: Chincherinchees

For something truly out of the ordinary, chincherinchees are superb looking. Boasting conical ‘spikes’ and pretty white star-shaped blooms, they add a unique touch to any home or attractive contrast to a mixed bouquet. Originally from South Africa, these blooms are interesting and adventurous.

December: Poinsettias

As the traditional Christmas flower, poinsettias make for a great present. Also the birth symbol for Christmas babies, their attractive red leaves send a cheerful message to anyone born in December. Other blooms that thrive during this month include the amaryllis, calla lilies or gloriosas with their fiery hot pink ‘fingers’.

  • Choose something long lasting like lillies, or Australian natives. Remember to trim your stems before putting into water as the ends seal over when out of water, adding either flower food provided by florists or a few drops of bleach will help your flowers last longer. Around October /November my favorite are peonies, its a short season bu very beautiful.
