Squeaky doors are a staple of horror movies. Hearing a door somewhere in the house squeak open in the middle of the night is something that no one wants to hear. So here is how to fix that squeaky door hinge in just a few minutes!

First, you need to identify the problem that is causing your door to squeak. So, open the door fully, and slowly move it back and forwards. Listen for when you hear the squeak and isolate where the sound is coming from.

  1. If the problem lies in one of your hinges making a sound, then count yourself lucky, as this is a SUPER easy fix! What you’ll want to do is grab some WD-40, or your choice of lubricant (you can even use butter!) and get ready to coat that whiny hinge. Be sure to place some old rags on the floor to catch the droplets of lubricant that may fall down. Thoroughly coat the part of the hinge that is squeaking with the lubricant. When you are lubricating, you should move the door back and forwards in order to coat all areas of the hinge. Now wait a few minutes, and voila, your squeaky hinge is fixed!
  2. Another problem you may encounter is dust or other foreign objects inside the hinge. If this is the case, you can use a vacuum cleaner to remove the small object. Then follow step one and thoroughly lubricate the hinge.
  3. If your door is squeaking due to the door coming into contact with the frame, then you have a few options. What you can do is check each hinge and see if they have been bent. If this is the case, you can try re-bending the hinge by pushing against the door and bending the hinge so that the door is parallel to the frame. If this isn’t possible, then you may have to remove the door and hinges using a screwdriver and replacing them, this should fix your slanting door problem!
So there you have it, the three most common reasons that door squeak, and what to do about it. Let us know if this solved your squeaky door troubles in the comments below!

  • Ive always just squirted on some WD-40 in the past

  • I use olive oil on all windows and doors it seems to work a treat

  • Great tips. I like tip 2, where you advise to vacuum or clean the hinge, most important to not further the problem by having material stuck in the hinge

  • I use cooking spray for this as it is so cheap and easy, a couple of squirts and it’s done.

    • I used cooking oil once and it was invaded by ants, then they decided to venture inside. At the same time I tried it on a toolshed door – no food nearby so it thought it would be OK. Part of the inside of the toolshed was black with ants the next day. You can also use 3 in 1 household oil. It tends to drip a little bit but WD40 sometimes does too.

  • I have been known to fix a squeaky hinge with a squirt of cooking oil spray. I must’ve had easy fix problems because it worked. Handyman uses for every day kitchen products, there should be a book about it

  • Hubby fixed the bedroom doors a while back, but we’ve deliberately left the squeak in the kitchen door – helps me identify when I have a child sneaking through to the pantry at strange hours. And yes, WD40 or graphite powder are our weapons of choice.

  • Thanks for the tips. I’ve used wd40 and not had a problem

  • WD 40 would be my first choice – and if it started to happen again once the oiliness wore off, I’d try graphite.
